Wayne County s Mass of Beauty is -Neglected by Citizens, Say Artists

BY EMMA L. FETTA .', 1 have painted In many placet, but I know of no place In the United States where there It such scope of landscape ; where there are valleys, hills, streams .and trees, canal to Wayne county." J. BL Bandy, nationally known landscape painter, whose town studio Is at 527 West Main street says. . ' ' . V . Elwood Morris, another local landscaplat of talent backed his statement, and the two pointed out several spots of gorgeous, natural beauty which they found long ago in Wayne county, and which are every body's property.

Either artist would make an ideal

Baedeker guide had Wayne county dis

covered her own wealth as a beauty 8 Dot. but Instead her people travel far

and wide to see what is likely to be vastly inferior country, while the artists paint, beautiful pictures right

here in Wayne. - Beauty Is Everywhere.

Both north and south of Richmond there, are places of particular note, which have been frequented by artists and other lovers of nature for years,

but the real charm of the locality, Mr.

Bandy and Mr. Morris say, is the vast

endowment of "consecutive beauty.

; In other words one only has to "turn around'' to find a new, beauty spot in

Wayne county. In many of the other and more greatly sought regions of beauty in the country, it is necessary

to travel for miles to find "the spot.

Only here and there is the place which tourists have called marvelous, or

which artists have found charming

enough to return. And to reach them very mediocre land must be traveled. "Not so In Wayne county. It is

hard to find a spot which is not beautiful enough to paint; not only once

but over and over again," they said.

"Practically everywhere in the valley

of the Whitewater, or any branches

and tributaries is country.- of . rare charm.' . "Have yon seen Buhl's place southwest of Richmond?" asked the painters. Many people have not even seen It. though it is one of the best known beauty centers. On Buhl's land is one of the most remarkable woods of the county, containing everything that woods should have. "Tress Begin to Pose" "And they have been painted so many times that the minute an artist enters their shade, the trees begin to pose," remarked Mr. Morris. Winding down through the country In a southerly direction is Clear creek, .well used as a picnic grounds farther north but becoming extremely wild and veiJant to the south. Near Buhl's woods-is Crescent lake. Elliot's ' mill, south of Richmond, and the south-going pikes, including Straightline, one of the steepest and narrowest, are central lines from which artists have made tangents for years. Mr. Bundy has a shack south of the last hill on the Wernle road. There on a hundred acres he says there is enough scenery to furnish him inspirations or the rest of his life. "Of course, it is nice to go about for the sake of change, but so far as hills, valleys, streams, fields, all sorts cf fascinating nooks and corners and broad vistas are concerned, I have them right there," said Mr. Bundy. "I like to paint the same place over and over. It is always different: the sky is ever changing, and my imagination la constantly affected by new

things I had not seen before. In all the pictures I have painted at my shack I have never gone off my own ground but once, and then I turned and painted my side." Ablngton Displays Beauty. Lick creek and its hills on the way 'to Ablngton, and this quaint old town itself are pointed out as places of rare vantage to the beauty seeker. Old stone fences, picturesque homes, and even the rare unchanged beauty of nature are to be found in Abingcton and vicinity. A certain charming river road breakting off from the Liberty Pike, crossing the Whitewater and Lick's Creek on

low bridges, Is one of the county's

champion walks The season doesnt matter, and despite the mud It's every

Inch a gem even on a wet day. This

whole region ta Immensely rich in foliage in the spring and summer. Nature almost overdoes herself In fertile valley land, and then turns abruptly np a steep bin and loses the travel in

miles of rough, bniy country.

Canyon Are North. Wayne ooontys canyons are north

of the Henley shack on the Cart Road.

This road begins directly north of

Reld Memorial hospital, swings along carelessly for a while and then begins a aeries of steady ascents and descents. The real canyons cannot be

seen from the road itself," but when

reached .they are an Invariable sur

prise , because , of their beauty and height Weathering has been at work

In this region. Turning northeast out of Richmond artists have many times sought Comer's Spring, on the second road east

of the driving park, and other places near the "Pump House." The "State line" region has "been considerably

painted.

Richmond artists have never turned

away and discarded this county and

other artists have occasionally discov

ered It and spent time here. Elmer

Wachtel came here once; Ouesser and Barhart, also of Cincinnati, came here.

"If only properly gathered I believe

we could have a school equal to the

Barbuon school," said Mr. Bundy.

according to .the weekly crop report of George C. Bryant,, field agent of the co-operative crop reporting ser

are using little additional help in the work on account of the high wages

asaea oy nusaers.

The report is as follows: "Favorable conditions prevailed

throughout the week and all farm work progressed satisfactorily.

"Corn husking is being completed in most sections of the state under favorable conditions and with but little additional help because of the high prices asked by huskers. "Reports ' of Hessian fly in the wheat continue to come in from all sections , of the state in . increasing numbers and more serious devastation. Many fields are being pastured with a hope of saving some of them.

"The condition of rye generally is good. - .. . "Tobacco markets "continue In a flooded condition, with average prices ranging higher , than last week. "Farm labor supply. Is equal to the demand in all sections of the state. Generally farmers do not feel that they can pay the high wages demanded. "With the exception of a few scat" tered cases of hog cholera all live stock is in good condition. "Pastures are very short and contain but little- feed. Wheat and rye fields are being substituted."
