of the United States army air service,;

according to Colonel Archie Miner, commanding the Mitohel and Hazelhurst fields on Long Island, The army flyers In 6 De Havlland and 4 bombing machines .with .12 De Havlland and 4 bombers in reserve, are to continue all winter cross country work, general map making, course charting and reporting ships la die I tress at sea. The latter feature will be accomplished by means of wireless equipment installed In the patrol planes. The radio also will be used in case the flyers need to' summon assistance. Colonel Miller said the flyers were giving an excellent demonstration of how an army airplane and pilot may be, utilised to advantage In time of peace. An observer accompanies each De Havlland plane. Each machine he said has an increased gas carrying capacity. The first aero squadron was organized and trained at KeUy field,

Texas, shortly after the outbreak of

the war and was later sent overseas where It saw much active service. Army flyers have long been doing

Mexican border patrol work but It Is

the first time, the colonel said, that they have been employed In similar active service elsewhere. Extension of the service to Include mapping of aerial routes on the Atlantic seaboard and later the middle

templation. At present while onethird of the first aero squadron per

sonnel Is out on patrol work the other

two thirds are resting. All flights are non-stop between the home field and

the destination, thus putting the pilots under a system as rigorous in point of training as they experienced dur

ing the war. Aviation experts have attributed the efficiency of American

pilots In France to the fact that they were compelled to fly at regular Intervals and, consequently, did not

have time to forget their training.

IT Is the declared purpose of the United States Government to restore the railroads at an early date to the control of their owners. The Association of Railway Executives represents those upon whom at that time responsibility will again rest for the prompt and successful movement of the country's commerce. Those constituting this Association are keenly conscious of their accountability to the public They have accordingly determined to present as fully as they can, the fundamental facts and considerations which they themselves

must face in their efforts to provide satisfactory railroad service. It is hoped to engage the inter est of the whole American people, whose welfare is so vitally dependent upon adequate transportation. The country can grow only as the railroads grow. The railroad problem must be solved and solved rightly and soon if our country is to prosper. It is to promote that prosperity permanendy and in the interest of the whole people that railroad executives will present to the public the situation as they see it.
