By WILLIAM R. SANBORN.
The friends and neighbors of Elijah Vnd O. C. Hapner. living 114. miles
north of Eldorado, on the Greenville Jlke, were out in force at the Hapner farm sale, on Thursday. When Auc
tioneer Troutwlne, agreed to call It a day, and H. B. Sell, clerk of the saie, tooted up the sale sheets. It was discovered that the guests of the occasion had Invested 13.645 in farm "plunder" and were toting home the goods. Taken as a whole the sale was more than ordinarily satisfactory. The offering of live stock was not large, but all sold well as to quality and weight A bunch of ewes brought better than late average sale prices, ranging at $12 up; while one pen of six cost James M arkey $84. fit . invs and trtMa 93 fall nlcra

George Farst paid $84 for 3 gilts, and Jack Bright invested $40.10 in a cow. John Guenther and Levi Fisher also picked up a few hogs at various prices. Bert Geeting bought all the

Curtis Geeting took the self binder in at $125; Lemuel Rush paid $62 for a corn planter, while Dan Punderberg considered a 2row corn plow worth $85, which price was also paid for a disc by Curtis Geeting. Bert Spltler got a farm wagon, complete with trimmings, for $79, and J. C. Riley scored on the storm buggy at $45. v Corn 8ells at $1.35. s The price, of corn varies widely at farm sales, depending on local feeding conditions. Sometimes a ' thousand bushels will be split up at various prices, but not so on Thursday, D. M. Eyler bid $1.35 and took the whole crib, 1,000 bushels, more or less. The hay, 10 tons of mixed timothy, all went to the high bidder, James Markey, at from $24.50 to $25.00, in (our lots. The ladies of the Unlversalist church at Eldorado provided an excellent lunch and were liberally . patronized. The members of the "Aid" present and serving were: Mrs. Nellie Penland, Mrs. Harrison Wellbaum, Mrs. Clara Kimmel, Mrs. Oma Rautcaw, Mrs.. Ada Wearon, Mrs. Hattie TJUom, Mrs. Mary Spencer, Mrs. Ollie Campbell, Mrs. Edith Shuman, and

WASTING 1,200,000 TREES
EVERY YEAR
The amount of waste paper collect
ed in all parts of Great Britain in 1914 was one thousand tons per week. "By 1918 this had been increased to 6,000
tons per week, or an Increase of approximately 600 percent. It requires eight trees of mature growth to produce a ton of paper pulp. Every ton
of waste paper which can be substl
tuted will save eight trees for other

SUGAR HISTORY IN BRIEF FORM!
Sugar has been an Important article
of commerce since the art of refining
and , crystallsation : waa ; discovered
about the middle of the fourteenth
century. - Sugar cane waa known much
earlier. It was grown to be eaten as
sweet sticks" in p re-historic times In
India and other parts of Asia. It was, however, not before 1606 that
the sugar of beets become widely known. - " .
In that year, Oliver de Serres, a
French agriculturist, published the
result of his experiments on sugar
beets. In 1747, Marggraf, a German chemist, developed a process for extracting the sugar from beets, and In
1782, the first commercial beet sugar
factory was established at Cunern,
Silesia. France subsequently took the. lead In perfecting the technical development of this branch of sugar
