f 1919 Christmas Shoppers in City
By THOMAS FAY. , Despite the coal strike, short shoppine hours,- scarcity of choice, goods and record - high prices, Richmond shoppers are buying the-most expensive gifts for Christmas in far greater numbers than before the war, say Richmond merchants. ! Player pianos of the best kind, and phonographs are being sold In unprecedented numbers. Instruments ranging from $100 to $200 seem to be the most popular. , ' . . Jewelers say that expensive watche. and diamonds are being purchased in greater numbers than ever before. Workmen 1 buy the most expensive Jewelry. Formerly when a workman came in, he was shown the cheaper grade.' This year the most expensive watches, rings and chests of silver are laid out.- Cut glass is in great demand although record prices are asked. Pur coats, costing between $200 to $500 have an unusual large sale this season, say ready-to-wear dealers. High grade suits and expensive garments seem to be in popular demand although extravagence in the matter of , women's clothing is not as pronounced as in other lines. "Hang the Price," Is Cry. Porto Rica Should Be Seaport of Carribean Says Secretary Baker By Associated Press) SAN JUAN, Porto Rico, Dec. 12. Discussing new world trade routes which, are being developed because of the Panama canal, Newton D. Baker, United States Secretary of War, Baid today that it is of common interest 'that the main port in the Caribbean , should be on Porto Rican soiL" Mr. Baker pointed out the Importance to the United States of sharing fully in the activities and benefits accruing from Increased world trade and emphasized the fact thatTorto Rico is an important station on new routes passing through the Canal.- Transportation between the United States and the Island must be immediately improved he said. "With shipping through the Canal Increasing each month," Mr. Baker said, "I see the time when a second Isthmian canal may be necessary. When he arrived here last evening Mr. Baker was tendered a reception. He congratulated the island people upon the part they played In the war and asserted it was the desire of the people of the United States that relations between the Island and the na-.
tion should be much closer.
disregard for price is shown by the Christmas shoppers. Confronted vslth a choice between the cheap and expensive article, the buyer will usually pick the more expensive. Silk shirts, retailing from $8 to $12, are greatly sought by women buying rifts for their husbands and brothers. Most frequently -it is the $12 shirt. Caps, last year hat sold for $2, now bring $6. and in spite of their price, are being purchased in great numbers. Overcoats, suits, and raincoats are selling more rapidly this season than last. Price does not seem to affect buyers of footwear, as these buyers are prepared to be told of another increase. House slippers and shoes, although costing twice as much as last year, are in greater demand. Christmas would not be complete without candy and fruits, and retailers in these luxuries report that in spite of the highest prices ever charged, fruits and candies will enjoy unusually large sales. Common Christmas candy that formerly sold for 15 cents is now bringing 60 cents. Toys are not very plentiful in Rlch-
mona stores tnis year, but those available cost twice as much as last year. Fond parents are rapidly exhausting the stock of toys. Mechanical and electrical toys are in great demand, although almost prohibitive in price.
