d"IIJ GOD AVE TRUST" ON AMERICAN COINS
, (Br Associated Preaa)
NEW YORK. Dee. 11. A new and Interesting explanation of Colonel Rooserelf s objection to the nse of the phrase "In God We Trust" on United States coins, Is afforded In an article
in the December Scribners by Joseph Bucklln Bishop, the former President's biographer. A letter written by Mrs. Roosevelt on Not. 11, 1907, to a clergyman who had differed with him about placing the motto on the coins read: "When the question of the new coin age came up we looked Into the law and found there was no warrant there In for putting 'In God We Trust' on the coins. As the custom, altho without legal warrant, had grown up, however, I might have felt at liberty to keep the inscription had I approved of Its being on the coinage. But as I did not approve of It, I did not direct that it should again be put on. Of course the matter of the law Is absolutely in the hands of congress, and any direction of congress in the matter will be Immediately obeyed. At present, as I have Bald, there Is no warrant in law for the Inscription. My own feeling in the matter is due to my very firm conviction that to put irnch a motto on coins, or toNise It !n any kindred manner, not only does no good but does positive harm, and is In effect irreverence which comes dangerously close to sacrilege. MA beautiful and solemn sentence such as the one In question should be treated and uttered only with that fine reverence which necessarily implies a certain exaltation of spirit. Any use which tends to cheapen It, and above all, any use which tends to secure its being treated In a spirit of levity, Is from every standpoint profoundly to be regretted. Would Cheapen Motto. "ft is a motto which it is indeed well to have Inscribed on our great national monuments, 1b our temples of Justice, in our legislative halls, and in buildings such as those at West Point and Annapolis in short, wherever it will tend to arouse and Inspire a lofty emotion in those who look thereoD. But it seems to me eminently unwise to cheapen such a motto by use on coins, just as it would be to cheapen It by nse on postage stamps, or In ad vertteements . Among the 150,000 letters written by Colonel Roosevelt during his public career, Mr. Bishop said he found a number from R-udyard Kipling, written in that famous author's characteristic way. that is. in the tiniest chirography. In a letter written In 1908 the Colonel eaid: "Great Heart" Is my favorite character in allegory, just as Pflerim's Progress Is to my mind one
of the greatest books htat was ever
written: and I think tnat ADranam
Lincoln Is the Ideal 'Great-Heart of
public life." He returned to this idea about Lincoln from time to time, a fact which explains the origin of Kipling's memorial poem entitled "GreafHeart," written when the Colonel died. Colonel Rooevelfs admiration for the Great Emancipator Was also shown in a letter which he wrote on March 9, 1905, a few days after his inauguration, to Sir Georsre Trevelyan, the English
historian and nephew of Macaulay in
which the Colonel said:
"It has been peculiarly pleasant to me to find that my supporters are to be found among the overwhelming majority whom Abraham Lincoln called the 'plain people.' As I suppose yon know, Lincoln Is my hero. He jtm a man of the people who always
felt with and for the people, but who
had not the slightest touch or tne
demagogue in him," AOIITH AMERICA NEEDS

TOWNS OF COUNTY
SAVE LIGHT, FUEL Conservation, as a result of the fuel
situation, has ruled in several towns in the county and surrounding vicinity, as strictly as In Richmond.
New Paris la saving light The
gravel pit of the Greenville Gravel
company, stationed there has been cut
off as a non-essential, according to
Robert Ashe, manager ol the Liberty Light, Heat and Power company, who furnishes light to the Ohio city. According to Ashe, who receives his power from the. city light plant and transfers it to number of towns, every town on his lines is governed by the restrictions in force here. Electric light is only used between the hours of 5:30 and 11 p..m at Cambridge City, according to the presi
dent of the town board. Factories un
able to provide their own power are closed until the situation gets better. The stores are running in co-operation with the government rules, and are closing at 4 o'clock. During the time they remain open they are furnishing their own light While no electric lights are used In Economy, the coal situation is not reported to be serious, everybody having a sufficient supply. Fountain City reports the same condition as Economy.
All lights win be shut off In Haters town each night at 10:30 p. m to conserve' fuel. - This action was the outcome of. a mass meeting of citizens and business men -held - Wednesday evening. The stores and factories will run a full day, curtailing light as much as possible. It was found that stores business houses and industries had plenty of coal on hand, and It was not thought practical to close down business.
LINER CARMANIA COLLIDES WITH STEAMER MARYLAND. BOSTON, Mass., Dec. 11. Messages Intercepted at the naval radio station here Wednesday night told of a col
lision between the British steamer Carmania and Maryland, about 500 miles east of Halifax. The Carmania was slightly ramaged. The position in which the collision occurred was given as latitude 45:40 north, longitude, 62:17 west. The Carmania Is bound from Liverpool for New York, and the Maryland is believed to be bound from Baltimore for London. One of the messages from the Carmania, declining a proffer of assistance from another steamer, said that aid was not needed, as the damage sustained did not affect the ship's safety. Another said the vessel was "proceeding all right.'!

Discoverer Tells Druggists Not to Take a Cent of Anyone's Money Unless Allenrhu Completely Banishes All Rheumatic Pains and Twinges. Mr. James H. Allen suffered for years with rheumatism. Many times this terrible disease left him helpless and unable to work. He finally decided, after years of
ceaseless study, that no one can be free from rheumatism until the accumulated impurities, commonly called uric acid deposits, were dissolved in the Joints and muscles and expelled from the body. With this idea in mind he consulted physicians, made experiments and finally compounded a prescription that quickly and completely banished every sign and symptom of rheumatism from his system. He freely gave his discovery to others who took it, with ihat might be called marvelous success. After years of urging he decided to let euf
ferers everywhere know about his dis- : cover through the newspapers. Your druggist has been appointed agent I for Allenrhu In this vicinity witfc the
