not accomplish through general direc tions. Smoke from the fire Is a sure Indication that gases are going off unburned. Therefore, as long as your chimney smokes, you are wasting coaL Domestic coal burning may be divided into two classes: 1. Where the furnace' can be coaled only once or twice a day, 2. Where the furnace can be tended frequently; hat Is, at intervals not longer than two hoars. FREQUENT COALING Carry the fire as nearly level with the bottom of the furnace door as possible, all the way across the fire box. Place a small quantity ot coal, a half shovel full or a tew small lumps, or one lump (say or aDOUt mu cuoic inches) right in the middle ot the tire. In firing lump coal, the size ot the lump may be Increased In proportion to the length of time that the nre Lmust be left without attention. - The four necessities are supplied aa follows: . Air passes In the ash pit door, through. the grate and up through the fire. With soft coal supply air above the fire by leaving the drafts in the furnace door wide open. With anthra cite close the drafts In the furnace doors,- unless an - unusually heavy clirge Is fired. These Instructions ,are capable of Improvement by cap able manipulation or the individual furnace. - , ' Hot air rises from the fire all around the fresh coal and mixes with the gases coming off the coaL The fire under and around the fresh fuel supplies the heat . Time should be afforded by holding the gases in the firebox as long as possible by not opening the ash pit door and the dampers any more than Scoffers and Doubters Why Let Prejudice Bind You to a Life of Rheumatic Torture?' AT NIGHT r. For Hot Air and Steam. In Mild Weather If possible, do not put on any fresh coal for an hour tor two ' before going to bed. Then cover the fire uniformly with ashes all over, until no fire can - be seen. Close ash" pit and furnace doors. Close drafts In furnace door, close ash pit damper, open check draft and close damper in flue leading to chlmey. In the morning shake the grate slightly and resume tiring as above instructed. . ' I Moderate Weather If possible. io sot put on any fresh coal for an hour or two before going to bed. Then cover fire over with anthracite coal ot nut or pea else or with coke of similar size, if either Is available; it not, leave the Cre bare. Close ash pit and furnace doors and so forth, as direct ed above tor mild weather. In the morning shake the grate only as much as necessary and resume firing as above Instructed. To Insure comfort ito the family on arising have one member shake the grate and resume , tiring about one hour before the rest get up. In Severe Weather Fire as for prolonged Inattention under which ever 'system ot tiring Is UBed. When very tine coal is burned in a strong draft. It may pay to wet it enough to keep the fine coal from being carried bodily out of the chimney by the draft; that 1, dampen, the coal slightly enough to make it stick together. Shelter your coal from snow and rain. Too much air wastes fuel as well as too tittle. If the domestic user keeps his firelbox full ot ashes and coal up to the Dotiom or roe lire uoor ana cnecKS the draft on his furnace' promptly, as soon as the house reaches a comfortable temperature, he will probably not use too much air.
