Larry Gilbert, star outfielder of the New Orleans Pelicans, was 'a victim of the fallacy that, once tried and found wanting in the big time, a minor leaguer cannot come back, until Manager Trts Speaker defied custom and
took Gilbert away from the Pelicans for the Indians in liio.
For three years Gilbert starred in
tne now Orleans outfield, while he was regularly passed up by the various major league scouts simply because he had "been up" once. Gilbert was
easily the best player in the Southern association the past two seasons. Dur

being more noticeable because there
were so many "fresh from Class B" Players in the Southern and because
Larry walloped the ball a little harder
than he had in former years. Larry dldnt hit beyond his speed as a' result of mediocre pitching, for as a. general proposition the pitching was as good as usual in Dixie's "big league. Gilbert simply had the very best year of his baseball career and he would have had a profitable season even in the American or National. Al Sothoron, Dayton, O., boy and star pitcher of the St. Louis Browns, was one of the main reasons why the Cleveland Indians , didn't win the pennsat in the American league this season. 8othoron faced the tribe of Speaker on seven occasions, winning slv of his games and losing the other because his mates were shut out. Here are the victories Al won over the Indians: May 6 Won in twelve innings over Morton. 6 to 2, after relieving Lowder milk, June 23 Woa over TJhle. 3 to 0. going the route. July 5 -Won over Jasper. 6 to 2, going the route. July 7 Won in ten innings over CoveleeUe. i to 2, after relieving Shocker. September l (second game) Won
ta eleven Innings over Bagby, 4 to 3, after relieving Leifleld.

Father Ryan says that the "jinx" is broken now and that you can't stop them. We're for you, Father. A ' musical comedy coming on a league bowling night proved expensive to the Licbtenfels crew. Too many single men on this team. Joe Hill found out last night how to make Father Ryan go at top speed. H's f urely a "dark horse." Coca Colas took the Wilson Cleaners for three straight frames with 3 deserving scores. The Cleaners rolled miserably and showed signs of lack of practice. "Bie Ben" Evans got discouraged and did cot try. He deserves better support than his team mates give him- Re practices most every day and al waysmanages to get his share of the maple.

There is plenty of promising mate
rial for each of the positions on the
Richmond high school baiXetbau team. The forward positions have the largest number of promising candidates, as 6 players have been showing to
advantage in recent workouts of the
squad.
Loehr seems to have landed a regu

Vore are struggling for the other for
ward position, wniie boo xeia nas a good chance. Dolllns seems to have the center position secure, although Vogelsong may show him opposition later in the season. LeRoy Harding seems to be the only worth while candidate for floor guard, while Oaylor and Martin are scrapping for the back guard Job. About 20 players will be kept on the first squad all season. Several candidates in the first and second year of school show great promise. These players will develop into stars in their last years of school if properly trained. Coach Fries will probably hold a light workout in the high school gym Saturday, if possible, and if not, several candidates will work out In the Y. M. C. A.

Monday. Mowe will then have a first string souad of 14 men. Plcklnr of
the regular quintet will be a stiff Job. It is more than likely that last year's winning combination will' be given first crack at the Dentals, although Goar may be shoved Into one of the forward positions.
