She Married An

BY ZOB BUCKLEY

I bad another trying scene with Eric Sands today. I was off ray guard. I bad finished my lunch with Athena. My mind was made up to tell her everything the ordeal of my mother-ln-law'B visit, Jim's continued coldness and resentment At my work and my being so much at Athena's, and my etruggle in regard to Eric when he dropped in unceremoniously and found me tearfully beginning the recital of my woes. "Come on out for a walk, you two temperamental souls." he cried, laughingly. Of course, Athena declined. And of course, I went. "You have not answered my question, Ann, and you must answer it: Do you or do you not really love your husband?" It was easier this time. I did not feel so trapped, so helpless as when he held me close by the wrists, sending through me those terrifying, sen suous thrills that robbed me of voice and thought "Frankly, Eric, I do not knew," 6aid I, miserably, for it is never an easy thing to tell a man like Eric Sands that the husband you freely chose a short year ago has disap pointed and exasperated you in a hun dred ways. For Eric loves me. I do not deceive myself on that score any longer. One fatal admission from me and Eric would sweep me off my feet, blind me to consequences with his fluent words, destroy my sane judgment by the dangerous charm his touch, his very presence, has for me. and by feeding my hungry spirit with his sympathy make me utterly unfit to find out my own heart's needs. "That means," he answered, "that you do not. If you are starving to death you don't have to stop and think -'.-m I hungry?' When you are lost

or not. When you have drunk champaene you tio not need to ask yourself what makes your blood leap and your spirits soar. It's the same with 1'jving. If you don't know, then you rior.'t love." "No, Eric, you are wrong. What you say applies more to passion than 1o love. There are many kinds of love. I admit that real love cannot exlwt without the tumult that is as wine in the veins. But when that dies tlown, or even dies completely out, something better is often left. "Affection, congeniality, understanding they are quiet qualities. But they make happy marriages. What 1 mean, Eric, is that you cannot judpe love holely by thrills. Love and fire may both be there. But because fire is,

Dear Mrs. Thompson:! can't help answerine an article in your column signed "High Fluting Sallie." I am a girl of seventeen. I have no mother nor anyone to tell rae right from wrong, but have learned this from experience: This world has been unkind to me and I have had many hard knocks, but I feel there is a better day coming. I . know both classes of boys and girls; those who insist upon the baser forms of love and those who enlov each other just for their companion-! 6hip. If you will but notice, the boy or eirl who does not indulge in promis - i'Uous love making. In lator years gets ! 5iiore respect from other people. This is not just preaching, but it is from the bottom of my heart to the poor misguided girls. ELAINE S. It is encouraging to get your letter. I like to be reminded that there are girls with the refinement and high moral sense you show. Of course i there are Rlrls and boys of both class-i es, and if I. with the help from letters . like yours, can convince two or three people my work is worth while. Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl eighteen years old. I live with my parents on a farm. I am a graduate I f rom high school and am also engaged j to a young man twenty-two years old. j He is not very good looking, and is J not large for his age. My father ob-; jects to his coming and said he was j oming against father's will. He said 1 ne wouiu nui nave us qun, uui ii " see me or help me if I do not get along all right. I do not want to tell my friend what, my father said, for I love him and he tells me he loves me. We have gone together eight months. I know it will break his heart to tell him. Should I let him come to 6ee me? BLUE-EYED MARY. Let the young man call upon you, just as he hus been doing, but do not become engaged. In a year or two, if your love is as great as it is now, it will bo reasonably safe to marry in spite of your father's objections.

A Display of New Silk Shirtings Reminding you of the nearness of Christmas there is no gift that is dearer to the masculine heart than a nifty silk shirt, and if you are deft with the needle you can make a much prettier one than you can buy already made.

Women, too, love these silks for workaday blouses, so neat and attractive for the office.

Silk shirtings are scarce. Many of the mills do not like to weave them because they can turn out other fabrics so much faster. Too fast dyes are hxrd to get. We contracted for these shirting3 months ago before the shortage, and we are offering them at a profit based on the cost at the time of purchase. If we bought them now we would have to pay more and you'd have to pay more. Beautiful all-silk fabrics, a large assortment, in a variety of new 1920 patterns.
