She Married An Average Man
BY ZOB BUCKLEY
I do not know -where this la going !
to lead us my lnsistance upon continuing my work, and doing it at Athena's house, since I cannot work at home, with Mother Salsuury at my elbow every mon ;nt One thing I determined upon, and have thus far practiced, and that is to keep cheerful. Amiability, I begin to think. Is the strongest weapon of all that are given us to fight life's battles with. The strongest lances of anger .break agains it. Grouches melt befort It Opposition loses its force when it meets it. Even a husband's cold disapproval grows less frigid in its sunny rays. And as. for the amiable person herself, she is girded with cour
age and cheered with hope. Today is
the first day that I could not force myself to present a carefree exterior.
My whole being seems shaken. I pleaded headache tonight, and when
Jim decided to go to his club I tried not to agree too eagerly. I have now been each morning for a week to Athena's apartment and done my work in the cubbyhole room ehe fitted up for me, bless her friendly heart! On three of the days Eric Sands
has been there. Once he came to lunch, with Peter Landis, and Athena made me stay. The second time he came before I had quite finished my dally dole of letters answering the lovelorn, the discouraged, the perplexed, the oppressed and the merely frivolops all the motley crowd that writes to Its favorite magazine for lack of a better confidant The third time was today. This marked our first serious talk since Eric came from England. "Ann, does my presence disturb or embarrass you?" he asked me, with arresting frankness.
tf " tWnk lt doe8 1)0111 a ,ittle" 1 I 'answered, wanting to be truthful, but
it Is difficult for a woman to be wholly truthful under circumstances that partake at all of the sentimental. I didn't dare say more. I must remain on the defensive. I cannot assume that Erie cares seriously for me. I must find exactly what my heart holds for hi--. Then then it will be time to take the next step, whatever It may be. "I want you to know, Ann," he went on, taking my hand gently and inclosing it In both of his with a sort of protecting earnestness, "that I
never dreamed you were in New York
when I came to visit Landis. I got your letter, telling of your marriage Just before I left the military hospital at Vichy.
"It was dated Centerville. It said
nothing of your coming to New York
to live. Before I say more I want
you to tell me one thing. When you answer it I shall be looking straight
Into your heart, so tell me the abso
lute truth. Don't try to spare me, and
don't deceive yourself." He stopped.
but still kept my hand within his, and
1 felt my fingers turn cold. "Your
husband," Eric's voice went husky and he cleared his throat "do you love your husband, Ann?" If Eric had only not touched me. If only my hand had been free and I could have moved about the room to relieve the sudden oppression that en
folded in my face. I tried to control L
the awful, frightening, weakening thrill that went through my body not like an electric shock, but as if a great warm wave had passed over
me ana siowiy receaea, leaving me
limp. But I could not. My throat seemed paralyzed. T
tried to speak, but no sound came
from my lips. I could not articulate the word "Yes" and I would not say "No. I hear Jim's latchkey. I can write no more tonight. (To be continued.)
As a Woman Thlnketh BY HELEN ROWLAND

When is a Woman most interesting
to men? Bernard Shaw won't tell!
No, no, no. No! He refuses to
"make a fool of himself!" Oh, very well! Then, here goesl
One doesn't mind being foolish, once
in a while just for arts sake!
A woman is most intersting to ANY
man, Just before the first kiss! When 6he isn't trying to be interesting. When she is interested in Bom& body else.
When another woman has begun to
bore him.
When she has brains enough to
make her forget that she is beautiful
And beauty enough to make HIM
forget that she has brains!
When she is old enough to know a
lot about men and still young enough to care a lot about them.
When she is clever enough to under
stand all a man says and not clever
enough to say anything which he
doesn't understand. When she is sufficiently experienced
not to be easily shocked and sufficient
ly innocent not to be easily kissed.
When she Is sufficiently spirituelle
to appeal to his higher nature and
sufficiently human to appeal to tne other ninety-eight per cent of him.
When she cares juat enough to re
spond if he is interested but not enough to be interested, if he doesn't respond.
When she Is fond but not too rona. When she likes him well enough to
be glad when he calls and not well enough to be miserable when he goes.
When she doesn't bore him to death
with indifference nor frighten him to death with devotion.
When she has been a widow Just long enough to begin to flirt a little with one eye while she continues to
weep a little with the other.

Farmer Says He is the Hap piest Man in Illinois, Now.
"I guess I was about the happiest man in all Illinois when I began to regain my strength after I started taking Tanlac, as I had about given up all hope," said Will Chambers, a well known fanner who lives on R. F. D. No. 3, Hanna City, 111. "Last winter I had a severe attack of the 'flu' which left me in a terribly
run down and weak condition, he
continued. "I lost thirty pounds in
weight and was so thin I was scarce
ly more than a frame, and was unable to do any work at all. I was in bed a number of weeks I do not remember just how many and when I
got up I could hardly get about. Even after I got so I could walk out as far as the barn I was so weak I don't believe I could have lifted an ear of corn, and I stayed in this shape for month after month, and nothing I did seemed to do me any good. I had no life or energy and was just dwindling away all the time and had about made up my mind I was going to die, and would lie awake nights, worrying over my condition. My wife was worried as much as I was, as she could see I was gradually growing weaker and weaker. "One day a neighbor was in to see me and said he had an attack of the 'flu' and it had left him in about the same condition I was, and that he had taken Tanlac and it had brought him
out, and advised me to try it. Well, my wife went to town and got me
three bottles to start on, and I wish
you could have seen the way I ' be
gan to improve when I started taking It. 1 got better and better every day, and lt was only a short while before I was doing all my work, and as soon as I felt as well as I ever had and today I am stronger and feel better in every way than I have in years. I have gained thirty-five pounds in weight, five pounds more than I lost when I had the flu. I always keep a supply of Tanlac In my house and never expect to be without it, and I give Tanlac the credit for my good condition and would advise others to take it if they are in the fix I was." Tanlac is sold in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwalte; in Greensfork by C. D. Corine; in Cambridge City by Mr. Dean House; in Pershing by Sourbfer & Rodenberg; in Centerville by Centerville Pharmacy, and in Milton by W. L. Parkins. Adv.
