In this year's report, 133 separate species were noted, from a single specimen of the Blue crane, green heron, bald and golden eagle and eave swallow, to hundreds of pigeons, sparrows, crows and blackbirds. Many of Mr. Ratliff 'a bird friends are not permanent visitors in the valley, but stop here for a short time in spring and autumn on their way to their summer and winter homes.

Mr. Ratliff has noted many changes in the number of birds, several species that formerly were plentiful through the valley are decreasing annually, end will soon be lost to the valley entirely. This is particularly true of the ruddy duck, purplearten and eave swallow. The ruddy duck is only an occasional visitor in the valley, usually following the larger rivers on his way to the north, but this year a pair was obtained for counting by Mr. Ratliff. Prevalence of English sparrows has caused a decrease in the number of martens, through lack of suitable nesting places. These birds, according to Mr. Ratliff, are driven

from their nests by the sparrows. Man's war on the housefly is another reason for the loss of the purple marten. The marten feeds on the wing, and the housefly was formerly one of his chief articles of diet. Since vhe housefly'ctusade has started, however, he finds his breakfast missing, and has hunted more plentiful food. Barns Drive 'Em Away. Modern architecture in barns is given as the rea?on for the decrease in numbers of eave swallows seen in the valley. In former years these visitors built their nests under the eaves, but in the new styles the eaves are not large enough to accommodate tho nests. Draining a portion of Clear creek, which supplied a certain kind of mud used by the swallows in home building, also has caused them to seek new homes. Only one pair of eave

Robins are increasing in numbers annually, and a larger number of downy woodpeckers were noted this year. A cousin of the downy woodpecker, the red-head, is decreasing in mirabera each year, however. Many people throughout the state look to Mr. Ratliff as an authority on birds and their habits, and be has been consulted many times. Mr. Ratlifi's collection of mounted birds is
