She Married An Average Man

BY ZOB BECKL.BY

Marriage is always being likened to a sea voyage. And I should say it is about as useless to try and fight off seasickness as to fight off the inevitable upheavals of married life. Some persons can cross the ocean in all sorts of storms with never a qualm. But I suspect them of having no nerves and very limited powers of observation. Some couples can eay at the end of fifty years of matrimony: "We have never had a cross word or an unhappy hour." Such jpairs I secretly suspect of being either threat liars or great simpletons. I cannot conceive of spending year tatter year in conjugal proximity with (any living being without collisions and hake-ups. Even congenial couples ttnust sometimes clash if any sort of Individuality exists in their craniums. Why try with such nerve-taxing energy to avert these clashes and whake-ups? Seasickness, they say, purifies our systems. Why shouldn't .n occasional quarrel, if based on come real issue, clear our spirits of .clogging elements? Thus I console myself for the fact that Jim objects strenuously to ray ,Kolng over to Athena's each morning ko do my work. T cannot possibly work at home so Song as Jim's mother is with us. I have tried and tried, and always failed. Like Jim, she refuses to regard my work as work. She puts it in the Fame category as china painting or embroidery something that one does as a sop to one's conscientious ncruploa against idleness, but drops whenever one chooses. Mother Salsbery sits and rocks and darns my stockings and Jim's, talking trivalitios until my nerves almost push through my skin. I made the mistake of mentioning to Jim that it was impossible to concentrate with some one always chattins at you. or moving about the plnce, or humming, or rattling a newspaper. Jim glared at me with real anger. "I consider you positively ungrateful. Ann," said he, "to talk like that when mother is working for you all th time." I wanted to retort: "Yes she does so many things that I don't want done, and none of the things that would really help me!" But I answered instead: "Well, I have a solullon to the situation. Jimmie. Mrs. Hast has fixed up a cubyhole for me at her apartment and I'm going over there to work." "And leave mother here alone?" said Jim, looking at me coldly. "I'm sure we don't have to treat mother as company," I replied in a tone that surprised myself for cheerfulness. I fear It is the fatal cheerfulness that means Indifference to conditions on the one hand and a nettled determination to bring about certain specific conditions on the other. "What's that about treating me as company?" asked Mother Salsbery,

coming in from the kitchen

"It is Ann's way of telling us she insists on continuing this wearisome work of hers at the home of her very Bohemian and undesirable friend, Athena Hast," sneered Jim. "Why, I thought she seemed a perfect lady," said mother, ingeniously, recalling Athena's successful pose of the day before. "She Paid lovely things about our foreign missions, and she's dead against suffrage." I hid my face behind my magazine.

I couldn't decide whether Jim looked j

more mad than surprised or more sur prised than mad. (To be Continued)
