SHIPPING STOCK BY TRUCK HAS FAULTS, SANBORN BELIEVES

BY WILLIAM R. SANBORN Of the 12,000 hogs received at Indianapolis last: Monday, 6.E00 were delivered by truck, some of thrm being hauled as far as 80 miles. This made a new high record, for trucked-in receipts have been growing during the entire season. The truckers are cutting into the railway receipts very rapidly and the truck division of the yards Is gradually assuming great prominence in that market.. There are mighty few market towns of which this can be said, and at many points a truckload of hogs or veals -would be a novelty. Take Pittsburgh, for instance. This quite important

market never saw a truckload of live stock, because they do not raise cattle or hogs in that section. It Is a consuming and not a producing center. Nor are there any noticeable receipts at Chicago by truck, though independent packers, outside the yards, may buy a few hogs from nearby farms. All ' the Chicago facilities and pens are for handling by and yarding from cars. How Losses Often Occur It was figured that the trucked-ln hogs at Inianapolis on Monday were worth $200,000. and estimated that 500 vehicles were used in the haulage, and that at least 2,500 miles were traversed with the loads. Perhaps you hadn't considered that this iruckingin often leads to a demoralized market, and for this reason: These receipts are always an unknown and unpredictable quantity. There Is no telling how many farmers are heading for Indianapolis with loads. There may be a few trucks and there may be hundreds of them. Railway receipts can be closely estimated from one day to three days in advance. The brokers, packers anad railway representatives are well informed as to loadings, where cars have been called for, how many cars, etc., and know Just when due to arrive. Large western markets can estimate very closely whether receipts are to be 5,000 or 60,000 and buyers lay plans accordingly, depending on their needs. The fact that this can no longer be done at Indianapolis, frequently affects shippers adversely, when receipts are unexpectedly large. You can't keep track of truck shipments or guage their number until they roll into the yards. A Shortage of Cars. In handling stock by rail the unloaded and disinfected cars are ready to be reloaded for any all points the shippers of live stock may select. Not so with trucked-ln stock. Unless there is a surplus of cars in or near the yards, the hogs have to lie in the pens

until cars can be obtained. It often happens that buyers resell to packers at a loss rather than to hold and feed until cars can be secured, and fresh receipts on a partly glutted market is thus affected in price, or it not, the "stale" hogs are scaled down, in either event showing a loss to shippers, except on a sharply advancing market. No need to Indicate what may happen in a serious break, such as have been frequent 6ince the decline set in. Hogs Average Lower. The Indianapolis market opened at a decline of 40 cents on Saturday morning, being depressed by packers. Later in the day shippers and order buyers helped to steady prices and there was Borne reaction from the

bottom. Two cars of lightweights sold at $13.60, and the top on the day was $13.65 for a small bunch. Compared

i with Monday last Indianapolis hogs

showed a loss of $1. Good choice : heavies which brought $14.50 at the t opening of the week sold at $13.50 on

the closing day. The general market finally closed strong, but the market for pigs was sharply lower, most of the sales netting $13. Packing sows sold Saturday at from $12.25 to $12.50. Cattle also ruled weak at Indianapolis last week, the bulk of killing cattle showing losses of $1 to $1.50 on the week. Sheep ruled steady on light receipts, and practically unchanged. Good veals sold at from $18 to $20 at the week-end. The receipts of hogs at Chicago last

week. 223,600, were the heaviest since February, and were 44,300 over the average for the corresponding week, since 1910. The top at Chicago was $14.25, paid for light butchers, on Saturday, although the market scored a net advance of 35c, compared with the general average of sales on Friday. The estimated average weight was 227 pounds. Bulk of sales went at $13.65 to $14.15. against $14.35 to $14.75 on last Monday. The closing cattle trade was on the lowest basis of the week, due to the largest receipts on record. The cattle receipts for the week totaled 109,800 head Some inferior stuff was $2 below the high time ot the previous week, but the general average of good beef steers at f 14.50 was but $1 below the preceding week and $3 lower than at the high time last August
