Placing the Blame The assassination of World war veterans in Centralia by Reds has stirred official Washington, and as is usually the case everyone is shifting the blame. Department of justice officials say they feared such an outbreak for months but were powerless to prevent it because congress failed to enact legislation by which the Reds could be curbed. Congress declares the department of justice can find enough authority in the statutes on which to base the action of its agents. The Centralia outrage illustrates two phases of our treatment of the radical and I. W. W. problem. First, it show3 how foolish is the tolerance with which we permit the leaders of bol-s-hevism and terrorism to operate in this country ; and secondly, it reveals how ignorant most of us are regarding the real designs of bolshevism. For years we have laughed at what we believed to be the foolish theories of soap-box orators and misguided fanatics, little dreaming that back of their utterances was a purpose sinister and dangerous, which in time would assert itself
in overt acts against the government and the people. We looked upon socialistic utterances and bolshevist tendencies as vagaries and theories. Few of us thought that the masses would be affected by the philosophy of destruction and would give a willing ear to the 'preaching of the agitators and a ready hand to fire the bullets for their leaders. Because of this lethargy on our part, our laws contained few provisions under which we could proceed against the menace. Our entrance into the war revealed for the first time the weakness of our laws in this respect and
aroused us to the danger threatening the repub-1
lie from within. Bolshevism and the I. W. W. movement made a capital mistake in attacking service men. It
emphasized the virulence of the hatred which j these men have for the government and the men i who fought for it, thereby rallying all patriots: to a defense of our institutions. And on the other j hand it launched an assault on 2,000,000 men who ,
have been specially trained to handle bayonets, fire high power rifles, manipulate machine guns and hurl grenades. We should say off hand that if the I. W. W. and bolshevist group wants to try conclusions with these veterans, let it go ahead. We can imagine no quicker way to get rid of all bolshevists than by the policy which they have adopted of attacking service men. Young American manhood has received an efficient training in "treating 'em rough" and has demonstrated on the battlefields of Europe that it knows how to handle rifle and bayonet. A little post war experience with bolshevists and I. W. W. radicals, who persist in attacking them, will be accepted by most of the veterans as a diversion.

Dinner Stories
The young man wasfca devout lover ft opera. All through the second act his hostess had chattered and smirked, entertaining the small party in her box and disturbing a large part

" Little Jimmy went with his mother to stay with an aunt In the country, and his mother was very worried as to how he would behave. But to her surprise he was angelic during the whole visit always did as he was told, and never misbehaved. As soon as he got home, however, he was his natural self again. "Oh. do you start behaving badly now?" "What's home for?" asked Jimmy In pained surprise.

SHINE? A boy came Into my office today and call out "shine?" And I said "sure." Then I watched him and thought of what a difference the shine made to my shoes. I thought that I ought never to have them without a good shine. They looked so much more cheerful to me. I rather look with good grace on the man or woman whose sboea are well shined. It sort of reflects their quality of mind. And surely the effect of a good shine on a healthy mind is quite stimulating. And then, it sets one to thinking. The shoe looks better and shows its worth to far greater advantage when it is well shined. It's that way with a person. With a neat appearance and a face that is kept covered with "shines" (smiles) there is something most inviting and magnetic. A brain with a fresh shine, also, shows Its worth. , And, as with a shoe, you never fully realise the quality of your mind until it is well shined with knowledge and experience, and lots of work and play. Behind the mud and wear of a good shoe are always wonderful shines! I am thinking of an emigrant boy who became a great lawyer. And a farm boy who became the world's greatest merchant. You never know what kind of a shine is back of a shoe until you put polish and elbow grease to the test there! Shine?

Good Evening BY ROY K. MOULTON
It is well, in these times, to have something to fall back on even if it is only a feather bed. Would like to know whether the tea Earl Grey brought with him from England 13 Just plain or regular tea. YOUTHFUL AMBITION. "What willayou be when you grow up?" I asked young Bobby Rlker; The lad replied quite candidly: "I want to be a striker!" Norman Stuckley Sir Thomas is going to try again to lift the cup, but there is some reason to doubt whether he is any stronger
than when he was a much younger man. It may be all right to make the I. W. W. kiss the flag, but it seems rather tough on the flag, at that. Strange as it may seem, the large number of strikes we have bad have not brought down the cost of living a cent.

"My rheumatism first came with sharp, shooting pains in my arms, hands and feet. Finally it extended up through my limbs and then it was not a long time until I had soreness in every part of my body." says Mrs. Hattle Carpenter, 724 South Ninth 6treet, Richmond. "When I started to take Pepgen I was sitting with my elbows propped upon a soft pillow with my palms turned up. It is about the only position I could occupy and even then I was in misery. My knees were so sore that it took a wonderful effort for me to walk. "1 tried everything, yes, everything, I knew about and that other people told me about to get relief. I took
medicine by the wagoa load, so to speak, and I rubbed Biyself with numerous liniments. My mantel pielooked like an apothecary's shop because there was so many bottles on itNothing helped me. "Then one day when I was feeling very bad, I heard about Pepgen. I didn't have much faith in it, but still I decided to try it. I said to myself, 'I'll take a chance anyway."
