She Married An Average Man
BY ZOE BECKLEY
How people live through marriage without a sense of humor will always be a mystery to me. Mine fortunately came to my rescue Just as I wa3 going down for the third time. I don't know what brought it. It 6imply came. After our clash the other night I began to consider myself the most tragedy-smitten wife In the world. Then, ' all of a sudden, I decided to laugh. I decided not to care. Let anything happen that wants to happen! It will find me ready for it. I guess the charm of life is in relaxing and adjusting one's self to what happens, without being too fus6y about lumps and bumps.
As If fate were trying to encourage me In my new attitude, the tense situation between my husband and me was ended by the most natural thing In the world, so natural that I wonder I didn't think of it and bring it about myself. Athena and Peter Landis simply came to see us. bringlnR Eric Sands with them! Jim's refusal to go there, his stubborn effort to believe I am in love with Eric, all our tragic complexities melted under the genial breeziness of Athena and her party. The meeting I had so dreaded passed off without embarrassment. Jim, taken by surprise, soon lighted himeelf and played the polite host. I caught In the upilft of my new mood, was gy and unafraid. If anything, Eric was the awkward one, but no one noticed his shyness. He is not yet recovered from his wounds and fever, and he is so covered with glory and medal3 that everything Is excused him. He is much the same from his grueling experiences in the war. A dozen times during their visit I felt hi3 eyes upon me, and when I glanced he was always Just turning away. We spoke little, except in general conversation, yet my woman's Intuition the surest guide on earth in love matters tells me these seven years have aided weight to his well, to his regard. He Is not married, Athena quickly made that known in her rapid-fire way. I think Athena Hast suspects Eric and I have had a love affair. She probably exaggerates it. And it would be Just like her to try to revive it, out of pure deviltry. Athena has always cherished a bit of contempt for Jim. I remember she once characterised him as "a sort of matrimonial booby prize" that I might have escaped if I had played my cards better. And It made me very angry, for no woman wants her skill in mancatching belittled. Even when a wife carries her matrimonial troubles as a sympathetic friend she'd rather be blamed for the troubles than have her husband berated. I do not know why it is, but I have seen women suddenly blaze out through their sobs and cry, "Xo, he isn't a fool; he isn't a brute!" whon they had come for the sole purpose of being sympathized with. A crushed woman would rather have you say: "I bet it's all your fault; you haven't been treating him right; you've been flirting or something." It must be because women so adore being dominated In matters of lore. Give us suffrage, yes! Business opportunities, by all means! Freedom, of course! But when it come3 to love, crush us, hurt us, make us weep, drag us through poverty, sin and disgrace, but don't neeleet i:s. or be
stupid, or wound our vanity by intimat.ng that we have picked a lemon in the garden of matrimony! Athena has invited us to what she calls "an informal but unrestrained hero-worship party" at her studio. She kissed Jim, holding him, squirming, by both ears, and made him promise to come.
