APPEAL MADE FOR DOLLS FOR ITALY
Dolls for Italian children are to be collected in Richmond, according, to announcement made Saturday. Communications have been received from Robert -Underwood Johnson, head of the committee on Italian War Relief, , by a Richmond woman, in which he asks that a collection of dolls be taken to be sent to Italy for the Italian children's Christmas. The dolls must be dressed and a request comes to attach to the doll a pair of children's hose and leave these articles at the Palais Royal any time before Nov. 25. The sender's ' name is also requested attached to the gift. Children who have cast off dolls that are in fair condition are urged to jt a fresh dress on them, buy a pair of stockings for an Italian child and leave them at the store. Mr. Johnson has written the following poem, "The Only Doll in the Valley," for the benefit of this doll campaign:
Every Child at Work Must Get New Federal Permit Certificates Offices of, H. G. McComb, public school vocational director, and of the county clerk, are facing the biggest rush of the season following the local effect of the federal law regarding minors' work permits. The state law has been superseded, assistant County Clerk Gus Hafner, explained Saturday morning. Permits were granted upon the word of the
applicant; now all new applicants, and all children now holding permits, must present official birth reports from the county clerk's office. t Upon the presentation of birth reports and other evidence McComb is regranting the work certificates. .

BY ROBERT UNDERWOOD JOHNSON I Up near the sources of Po Where the lakes reflect the snow And Italy's touching heaven, There's a little girl of seven, A cara bella figlia, With the tinkling name of Ottilia: Hair like the blue black night, Ana a brown, pomegranate skin', That war has failed to blight. She lives in a little alley Of stone, near the big casino, And against her gown of niarino, Sewed up like the good Bombino, She carries a rare delightThe only doll in the valley. II What matter the numberless cracks In its little noddle of wax, Or that one eye from its socket Lies in Ottilia's pocket? That kisses have worn the paint Till the red of the lips is faint? For this is the children's saint And all the girls in Bezzecca Flock to Ottilia's alley As the Moslems flock to Mecca. And she with a heart of gold Lends them the doll to hold; And, of all the wistful eyes, Which speak of the greater lackHers who begs for the prize. Or hers who gives it back? Oh, yes, they have other needs, Those patient wait's of warVictims of noble deeds In regions near of far Done by their gallant sires. Long worn at Freedom's fores: Milk?- they've forgot its look! Shoes?- but the clogs are strong. Coal?- ah, there's little to cook, And the winter nights are long. So when the peasants appear In search of some common cheer At the scanty market rally Of the Val de Ledro drear. What pleasure for the girls To be for an hour beguiled By the cheeks and the flaxen curls Of Ottilia's foster-child The only doll in the valley'. Ill chilrden. rich with the spoil Of many a Christmas gene. Who know neither hunger nor toil And revel in lace and lawn: Girls of America! think Of the debt that your country owes To the little dark daughters of those Who fought for us and fell On the frozen mountain brink, Or the hot Venetian plain In the homesick sound of the vesper bell. Their loss your children's children's gain. From the corner where you keep Your cradled pets asleep. Give, for the friends of Ottilia. ' Your favorite "Mimi" or "Sa'iy." "And if, on the ocean it mioses The warmth of your bed-time kisses. It will find no Lick of others . From Italy's little mothers. Give, till from Trent, to Sicilia There shall be some cheer through th winter drear For the girls in every valley

Mrs. Rosa Carver, of 530 Ferry street, Wabash, Ind., had a multitude of troubles, pains and symptoms,
which puzzled the doctors. Her trou- j ble was a tumor, according to some j doctors, appendicitis, according to j others, and all suggested an operation. : In bodily pain and mental anguish she went to consult the Inter-State Doc- ' .ors, those great medical specialists j who have their Richmond office on j .he second floor of the Starr block,
I jnrner of Tenth and Main streets, over j Ihe Starr Piano store. They gave her 1 1 iedical treatment and she tells of her ! lelief in this public letter: ! . "Wabash, Ind. I Tlnter-State Doctors: i "Over three years ago I began suffering with a severe pain in my right Bide and running all through my stomach; I had a bad headache all tho time. I would have severe chills and pains in my side and then have higti fever. My tongue was so coated that things would not taste right. After ' eating I would feel so tight and bloat up so I was in misery. My headache and pain in my side was constant Sometimes a great lump would come in my right side over my appendix, ' and stay for days at a time. In tha last two years I had a lump in my tide nearly all the time. I was ia so much misery that I could not sleep well and my kidneys bothered me night and day. When I did sleep I had all kinds of dreams. Some doct rs told me I had appendicitis and must be operated on at once. Other3 said I had a tumor and it must coma out. I did not want to submit to an operation so just dragged on till you came to town. On the 13th of September, last year, I made my first visit to you. From that time on 1 have been gradually improving till now I am entirely well. My bloating is gone, my strength has returned and my appetite is good. My complexion is cleared up, my bowels seem perfect and my kidneys do not bother me at night. And best of all, the paia in my side has gone, and all tha tumor and swelling has disappeared. My appendicitis is gone and it is because of the treatment you gave me. Everybody I meet says I look ever eo much better and I surely feel like a different woman. I want to thann you gratefully for what you have done for me and I will do all I can for you any time. "Yours truly, "MRS. ROSA CARVER. T.30 Perry Street." The Richmond office is now open to patients every day in the week with DR. B. THOMAS DAGGY In charge from 9 a. m. to 8 p. m. Adv.
