"Broken Blossoms" Holds Much Poignant Drama
Sprawling down by the East India docks in London is Limehouse, not a pleasant place, but over fascinating.
There with all the fragrance of the orient thrust into new outer setting, is laid the scene of "Broken Blosrur. at tho Washington Monday night. Cruel things are done in the course of the picture, but through it all is The pure love of the Chinese man who remains pvtr faithful to that which he worships the poor little,, rawbonod i;irl, shue to a pugilist. Mr. Griffith has made this picture one of his foremost if not his greatest production so far a?? acting is conrei nc-d. N'othinjr massive is there in the -ettn?r but it is almost perfect ill atmosphere.
MURRAY It has become the belief In theatredom that whoever plays the title role In "The Bird of Paradise," Richard Walton Tully's romantic drama of Hawaii, which comes to the Murray Nov. 10, li almost certain to attain theatrical fame. Bessie Barriscale. noy a high-salaried screen star, created the part whne the play was originally produced in Los Angeles, eight years ago. For the New York premier, Laurette Taylor was chosen as the unfortunate princess. Her success in "The Bird of Paradise" led to her engagement In "Peg O' My Heart." She is today one of America's leading actresses. Then came Lenore Ulric, whose Interpretation of the role won her fame and recognition from the Atlantic -to the Pacific. David Belasco obtained her services after 6eeing her perform in the part. Then followed Carlotta Monterey. Next came May Buckley, the well known actress. She was fol
lowed by Muriel Starr, who is now in the Antipodes, appearing in the Tully play. Last season Marion Hutchins was the Hawaiian princess. She now has a lucrative contract with a Los Angeles motion picture company. Florence Rockwell, the present portrayer,
has been a prominent leading woman for several years, having appeared here in the support of Robert B. Mantell, Henry Miller, Guy Bates Post, Nat Goodwin, and other notable stars.
MURRETTE Love, overwhelming commandments and caste, flames in the life of Nella Banard and then turns to ashes; and out of the ashes arises as strange a fate as ever led a young woman to ultimate happineps. This is the theme of "Broken Commandments," a William Fox photoplay that opened at the Murrette Theater with Gladys Brock-

well In one of the most convincing roles she has presented. The convict lover who throws dice for possession of the girl, and then mysteriously passes out of her life, just as strangely comes back again, telling his love story to her husband. The final situation when the wife, the husband and the convict lover- father of her child come face to face is tense with emotion, and tho outcome is a big surprise even to the girl wife herself, MURRAY. Those who have not Been "Sacred Silence" at the Murray Theater have missed not only a fine photoplay finely presented, but what is generally conceded to be the best bit of acting William Russell, the star, ever did. This vehicle has proved to be a most fortunate selection for Russell's initial appearance under the Fox auspices. The final showing here will be made tonight WASHINGTON. Off come the husks of your daily life; it rips and tatters those drab old dreams of the world-a-day.

Hot nerves sponged with the cooling spray of melodious colors. Weary brains glowing again with a lyric-love that bathes the soul and bricks the brain-cells. Bodies tired and loose with the burdens of life's trash are startled into happy strength with warm, enticing melodies that were especially written by D. W. Griffith for this wonderful production.
