UIOACH THREATENS

USE OF FLY-PAPER IN ST. MARY'S GAME

I St Mary's, in Saturday's scrap with Earlham, probably will run Into an aerial game that will be hard to stop. According to Coach Moore, Earlham will spend its time every afternoon

until Saturday, in working out an aerial offensive. That the Quaker squad has the material by which to build up an aerial attack was shown in the final quarter of the Wabash game. The Earlham line, with the exception of the absence of Howard Mills and the return of Carey to center, will present the same appearance as against the Ldttle Giants. Although the Earlham line is lighter than the average line of college football, opposing back field men find it a stone wall. With the exception of Notre Dame, Earlham Is the only Indiana team that has defeated a team from another state. Wilmington was the victim. Indiana, DePauw, Purdue, Wabash and i Franklin have all met defeat when trying to advance the superiority of , Indiana football against that or rival states. "Fly-paper or a good brand of glue, will be used by Earlham against St. Mary's, if the frequent fumbling does not stop," says Coach Mowe. "Earlham practically presented Wabash with 3 touchdowns by frequent fum"bling, and is this performance is started against the Dayton- college I will call time out and put a supply of glue upon the hands of the Quaker eleven."

Horse to Go in Less Than 2 Minutes in 1919 The 46th renewal of the Grand Circuit series closed at Atlanta Oct. 18, iafter a run of 15 weeks, during which ! there were 13 meetings at which 270 Jraces were contested. Of that number, 166 were for trotters in which there were 1,163 starters and 104 for ipacers in which the starters ran up to 727, making a total of 1,890 for the eeson. For these events the premiums for trotters amounted to $330,064.49 and for pacers to J156.378.10. making a grand total for the year of $486,443.59. Rainy days kept this amount from running over half a million. During the first 6 meetings, the weather was very favorable for racing but after the horses arrived at Philadelphia some one upset the rain barrel and it never got back into position during the balance of the season. Two days were checked off the list at Belmont Park us well as at Poughkeepsie and Hartford, while Bo3ton lost almost three And Syracuse almost two, 9 races beJjg declared off at that point. The Columbus September meeting was also hampered by the weather but managed to give all of its program, while a colt race was all that was skipped at Lexington. At Atlanta the curtain fell on the series in the rain with the loss of one day's program. Larger Total of Meets. Tho series of 1919 runs the number

of meetinss given by members of the Grand Circuit in 46 years up to 402 at which Vr premiums amounted to ?12.S05,3C3 92 Hartford is now the senior member and Toledo the junior, while Cleveland alone remains of the ,four which started the organization in ; ' 1373. At the start, its meetings were held over the golden oval at Glenvllle but were transferred 10 North Randall in 1909 when the present course made Its bow to the racing world. While the average rate of speed was fpter in 1919 than in the past, there has been very few sensational permormances except among the aged, some might call them old, horses. Single G's heat In 1:59 at Toledo was the only one recorded below two minutes, while Lu Princeton leads the trotters with a time record of 2:01 and a mile in 2:02 In a dash race. All of these are a trifle short of the returns In 1918 when Single O and -Miss Harris M placed the three heat

irace record for pacers below the two-

0mirute line, while both Mabel Trask r.nd St. Frisco won heats in 2:01. The injury sustained by Ante Guy in her second race, no doubt, kept the

trotters from making a new mark but all that can bo said for the pacers is that they could not step up to the new standard.

Association Bonus System Makes Big Hit Among Men A bonus system inaugurated in the American Association this year made a hit with the players and the hustling which the players did in order to earn their bonuses made a hit with the fans, so that the system is quite likely to be in effect again next season. The purse from which the bonuses were paid was collected by lopping the sum of one cent off every paid ad

mission to the ball parks on the cir

cuit, and at the close of the season ap

proximately $10,000 was available for

distribution among the players of every club except that which finished last. Each member of the champion St.

Paul club received $187.50, and the

amounts paid to the players on the remaining six clubs that shared in the pool were graded downward so

that the players on the club that finished seventh each received $25.

RICHMOND HIGH

TO DRILL HARD FOR NEWCASTLE

With two complete days o rest, the Richmond High eleven is to hold a fast practice at Exhibition park Tuesday afternoon, to wear off the kinks in the muscles of the players, for the big game of the year. Earlham may have her annual game

with Wabash and Notre Dame her In

diana, but Richmond High school has

its annual big scrap of the year here

with Newcastle. Civic and school

pride between the two schools is at

the top-notch, and Saturday's game at

Exhibition park will be the big one

of the season for both.

Boats would have been required for

a -workout Monday afternoon. Coach

Rock does not Intend the squad to have too much rest. A skull drill was

held Monday evening. During the ees slon Rock delivered some forceful lan

guage -Umt the weak spots of the

tu.in. Ends Are 8trong.

The end positions on the Richmond

line seem to be well taken care of, for Zuttermeister and Clark are both playing a sterling game. This is one burden taken off the shoulders of Coach

Rock.

A portion of each drill will be spent

in following the ball. Fumbles, mainly, were the cause for SMirday's defeat. Had Richmond been able tqj follow the ball instead of letting a Ken

tucky player drop on the fumbles, the

score would have had a different ap

pearance. Intensive drills in the art

of forward passing will also be doled out.

Bear stories from Henry county are

to the effect that Richmond will be

surprised when the two teams line up Saturday. It is also rumored that two new players of exceptional merit have been added to the Newcastle list.

will be restricted to the altar of the Virgin and the ambulatory around it. These will occommodate only about 1,500 persons. The interviewer describes how he met the cardinal at Rheims in a simply furnished apartment of the archiepiscopal palace, with a shell hole in the wall. Cardinal Luoon, despite his 77 years, is still hale and alert, and he is an optimist. "Destroyed, my cathedral? WThy, no," he said. "The damage is much more easily repairable than is generally believed. A few ancient parts, it is true, cannot be replaced; but the beauty of the cathedral lay, first, in its stained glass; secondly, in Its sculp

tures, and thirdly in its statuary. "Of the stained glass, nine-tenths has been saved and brought to Paris. The remaining tenth can be restored

by specialists, with the aid of much patience and a great number of colored photographs we have. As regards the sculptures, we shall use the numerous moldings we have of them. Many have hau to be restored anyway in the course of centuries, such as for instance the large piece representing the Assumption. That was restored in 1875. "As for the statuary, we have so many moldings that it will be easy to reproduce the damaged parts. The pillars, with their doorways have been

badly damaged by fire.

"Was there not some talk of leaving

the cathedral as it was?" the reporter asked.

"If the evidence of Teutonic bar

barity have to be preserved, let them be kept in a private museum," replied the Cardinal gravely.
