WORKMEN STAGE SAFETY DRIVE ON RAILROADS

All possible steps are being taken by the railroads here, to Impress upon their employes the necessity of keeping down accidents. Posters and notices reminding them of the National Railroad Accident Prevention Drive. October 18 to the 31. are placed on all bulletin boards, offices and similar places where they will attract the attention of the railroaders. F. J. Stlmson, chairman of the Richmond division saftty committee, is issuing a safety badge to each employe and a bulletin showing the standing of the local division is posted everdy 24 hours. A reminder is placed on the bulletins, which says: "Chances travel upon crutches. Do you want to travel that way?" Engineers are even decorating their mounts with various inscriptions, calling attention to the drive, which has never before been attempted on such a large scale. Shopmen, trainmen, ardmen, and all others connected with a railroadd, have pledged themselves to do all in their power to prevent acciednt, and special inspection of all yards, shops, and the like, have been made to make sure that no unsafe conditions exist.

American Energy, With Soap and Water Defeats Serbian Typhus Epidemic (By Associated Press) BELGRADE, Serbia, Oct. 24. American physicians and Red Cross workers conquered the typhus epidemic in Serbia, by using soap, scrubbing brushes, kerosene, disinfectants and delousing machines, says Lieutenant Colonel Edgar Erskine Hume, of Frankfort, Kentucky, director of the American Red Cross here. "We went into the homes of people and carried the patients out," said Hume. "At times they were reluctant to leave and we had a hard task overcoming fatalism. Often we had to use force. Demand Is made on Germany by the supreme war council in a note, the text of which has not been made public, for delivery forthwith of 5 former German vessels, which have not been turned over under the treaty on the pretext that the shipB having been sold in 1915 and 1916, by the Hamburg-American line and Kosmos line to Dutch shipping companies, were consequently not German but Dutch ships. The ships concerned are the Johann Heinrich Burchard, William Oswald, Brunschweig, Denrath and Nassau.
