FARM WOODS URGED BY PETERS BEFORE FORESTRY MEETING
(By Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS. Oct- 23. Encour-1 agement of Intelligent farm forestry was given by J. C. Peters, chief of the :fate co-operation work in the United states forest service, as the most 1mrortant of 5 methods which have been , dvanced for forest preservation, for ir Indiana OMo and Illinois. Mr. Peters spoke Wednesday before the tri-stato forestry conference in session pf which the three states are :.- resented. ; rv.'er methods, In which federal ... '. etnte agencies can co-operate in ?:.. work, the speaker paid, are acqui- : ' on of public forests, protection ; r'nst forest fires, reforestation of, : uded lands and conservative cut-! '-Hg. I "The conservative handling of for-, -s connected with farms," said Mr. ( Peters, "can be very largely encouraged through the agricultural extension work conducted under the Smith-( Lever law. The appropriation under (
this law for the current year is over $4,500,000, which for the most part the states must duplicate. The money Is
aloltted to the states on the basis of rural population. The work is chiefly demonstrated and is carried on by county agents right on the ground. One con readily see the possibilities in this for extension in farm forestry. No phase of forestry is of greater importance to Indiana, Ohio and Illinois than the proper handling of farm woodlands or. the basis of continuous . produ-..ion." I Declaring that the federal govern-; ment has not given adequate assistance to states in meeting forestry problems, Lieutenant Colonel Henry S. Graves, chief of the forest service of the United States department of agriculture, suggested a federal law.' carrying appropriations for states which do their share in providing for. ?uch work.

Your Government Warns You. Here is Dr. H. A. Garfield's Statement, and it's Authentic "Miners demand a 60 increase in wages, a six-hour day and a five-day week and threaten to strike November 1st if same is not granted. If their demands are granted it will mean an advance of $1.00 per ton. If refused and a strike is declared, you will not be able to get coal at any price. The WISE man will get it at once. Buy now a big shortage is coming. Thousands of miners are going back to Europe. Coal production has fallen off considerably and a shortage of many million tons looks probable. My advice to consumers is to buy now while they can get a selection and delivery. I feel bound to say that, as I see the situation, we are likely to experience a coal famine." These are all facts. Consider them. Quick action being so apparent, we cannot urge too strongly that you buy your coal NOW so as to be sure of having it this winter.

MINERS MAY ASK SIX HOUR DAY WASHINGTON". Oct. 15. Entering on an investigation of the increased price of coal, a Senate Interstate Commerce sub-committee today brought forth testimony that a shortage of cars and labor difficulties were hindering coai production, that certain elements in the miners union were intent on nationalization of the coal mines with adoption cfa six-hour day and a five-day week plus a wage increase and that unless problems of production were solved the country would be brought face to face with a coal famine in the coming winter. Harry N. Taylor, president of the National Coal Association, an organization of operators, declared a bill hai been prepared for submission to Congress providing for the nationalization of the mines. He insisted that the more radical of the miners appeared to be gaining control in certain districts and that there was a serious danger that these elements would make an earnest effort for the institution of something approaching, "soviet methods" in conducting the properties. Reduced Hours. Fear was expressed by Mr. Taylor that, at the miners' convention in joint conference of miners and operators in Buffalo, New York, action might be taken to further endanger production. He said it was known generally in the industry that an attempt would be made at the Cleveland meeting to put through a nationalization program with a six-hour day, a five-day week, and an increase in wages.

Coal production has fallen off to an alarming extent. This is due to a combination of causes. No Increase in Output is Possible Without Quick Action by Coal Consumers! Coal cannot be produced and held in huge quantities at the mines awaiting the convenience of buyers. It must be moved as fast as produced and kept moving until it finally reaches the consumer. During the past two years we have been confronted with a Coal Shortage. In 191 7 it embarrassed our conduct of the war, Shut Down factories, left cities in darkness, Shortened the working hours of public utilities and caused Great suffering in many homes. In 1918, in response to government appeal, consumers bought their coal during the Summer Months, and as a result of their action and the patriotic, superhuman effort on the part of operators and miners, the Greatest Production in the history of the country was achieved namely 585,000,000 tons. Thus a shortage was averted. The Following Dealers Can Make Limited Deliveries Now. Don't Delay
