G. 0. P. DOPESTERS SEE SURE VICTORY FOR 1920 PRESIDENT

NEW YORK. Oct. 23. Republican party "specialists." whose business it Is to watch the pulse, temperature and blood pressure of their patient, have recorded the fallowing notations on ther political l harts: A Repuhiinn, they bel'.eve, will be

elected r-riident in 1920, unless the; -arty commits a terrible blunder in j

electing its candidate and causes a . ilit in Republican ranks. The supporters of Major-General Leonard Wood are the most active toay In the manoeuvers for position at hr nominating convention. Next to Wood, Gov. Frank O. Lown of Illinois, Is the most talked of ardldate in the field now. Charles Evans Hughes is r.ot planning to be a candidate again. William Howard Taft will not be a candidate. Senator Johnson of California Is regarded as having weakened his chance of the regular Republican nomination by his "too radical" stand against the peace treaty. Lowden Well Liked. Lowden, according to national leaders here, Is assured the Illinois and Iowa delegations at the convention, and already, with his campaign only fairly started, has made a tellling drive Into Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri fields. For months prominent Republicans In New York have been talking Lowden quietly in an effort to sound out sentiment in the financial heart of the

country. It Is understood that they are satisfied with the response. Gen. Wood, however, were the convention to be held today, undoubtedly would make the strongest bid. But among political leaders it is doubted if the country would accept a military candidate. According to one of these leaders today, the country wants no warmaker for executive, is tired of professors, and wants a business man at the helm. Sure Republican Victory. Republicans here feel that "almost any Republican could win in 1920." They believe that Taft, Hughes, or Senators, Johnson. Harding or Poin-

dexter would make strong races, but Senator Johnson has taken such a strong position on the peace treaty and the league of nations that he has alienated himself from a vast portion of public opinion, it is declared. As for former Justice Hughes, hb does not contemplate or expect today to be a candidate. Being a public man of repute, it ia possible, of course, that he might change his mind, but as the situation stands today it may be stated flatly that Mr. Hughes does not expect to run again. And Tatt, while extremely popular in many parts of the country and while

he would be regarded as the best man to break the "solid south," he is not considering getting into another fight according to his intimate friends. Johnson "Too Radical"? There is no doubt that the potentialities of Senator Johnson of California constitute something of a political bugaboo to the Republican machine. Johnson is recognized as a fearless statesman "with considerable of the Roosevelt in him," and his recent campaign through the country on the treaty developed such tremendous meetings that he immediately became

a figure to be seriously reckoned with. With the "regular" leaders eay Johnson "has gone too far" in his treaty and league of nations fight. Rumor that Johnson might continue his independent course to the point of heading an independent ticket if he is not chosen by the Republican convention as its candidate, is doubted by Republican leaders.

The Germans are fearful that thousands of the American automobiles sold by the American Expeditionary Force to the French will be smuggled across the German border, constituting an undesirable invlsion of the German automobile industry. It is said here than 80,000 American cars were sold to the French. Germany is reported to be very short
