FRENCH REBUILDING DEVASTATION FAST

(By Associated Press) PARIS, Oct. 10. Captain Andre Tardieu, member of the French peace commission, speaking at a meeting of the French-American club gave interesting figures on the reconstruction work accomplished since the armistice. Sixty thousand of the 550,000 houses in the battle area wrecked by shellfire have been rebuilt; 2,016 kilometres" of the 3,246 kilometres of railway destroyed have been repaired, and 700 of the 1,675 kilometres of canals rendered useless in the course of the hostilities are again in commission. Of the 1,160 plants dstroyed by the enemy, 588 have been repaired. Equally remarkable progress is being made in restoring to cultivation the vast areas in the devastated regions which the end of the war left with their rich surface soil plowed under by artillery fire. The devastated area embraced 4,500,000 acres. Of this approximately 1,'000,000 acres have been returned to the farmers, and 500,000 acres of it are ready for the seed. Ten million metres over six thousand miles, of barbed wire, have been disentangled and carried away in the operation. The yield of taxes, which was five billion francs in 1913, has been raised to twelve billion francs in 1919 Commissioner Tardieu added that a country which had lost nearly 2,000, 000 workers killed or incapacitated by war, which had been deprived by invasion by one-fifth of its productive capital and which never the less of its own efforts had accomplished such a showing as that recited above has a right to rely on the effective help of its allies to restore completely its economical and financial status.

German Socialists Are Charged With Malicious Criticism of Military BERLIN, Oct 10 Independent Socialists were accused by Gustav Noske, rainlf.ter of defense in the national assembly of "complicating Germany's position abroad by malicious and unjust criticism of tho military administration. He told them they "were licking tho boots of the British and the French commissions in Berlin." Dr. Herman Mueller, minister of foreign affairs, admitted during the session that many soldiers from South German garrisons were going to the Baltic provinces on fraudulent passports, adding that they were chiefly "adventurers who expect a free and easy life there and expect eventually to settle down." Discussing the prevailing lack of discipline the minister declared it made it easy ior German troops to go over into tho RussiaD service-, and he

asserted that, people wero "daily approaching the foreign office in a secret manner with information to the effect that the entente would bo pleayed to see Gorman troops fighting in Russian units."

"if the entente is desirous of having 1 us withdraw the last. German trooper trom Russian formations", he said, ! "we might be permitted to express the desire that the entente request Russia to discontinue attempts to attract; Germans into their service.'' :

James Sexton. James Sexton, general secretary of the National Union of Dock Laborers and labor member of parliament and of the Lloyd George cabinet, did much to brinjr about a settlement of the British railroad strike. It was chiefly because of his individual efforts that the strike did not spread to his organization.

Richmond School Children Show Appreciation of Art For the past week various school grades have been brought to the high school building to see the pictures on exhibit in the public art gallery. Tests have been put to these pupils regarding the portraits and other paintings of Robert Grafton and Waymari Adams. They have been asked what was the most interesting in certain pictures, and what the artist intended to be the center of attraction, and have shown considerable ability in the determination of their answers, the instructors say. Every school child in Richmond will

be given an opportunity to see the Adams-Grafton exhibit before it closes on October 22. It is thought by the teachers that the lessons given them in their 'visits to the gallery will prove that children can understand, and do appreciate art.

BITRO-PHOSPHATE IS GOOD FOR THIN

NERVOUS PEOPL

A French scientist has discovered an organic phosphate which should be a very effective remedy for weak nerves, sleeplessness, thinness and lack of strength, energy and vigor. Its substance Is described by specialists as identical In composition with certain vital elements naturally found in brain and nerve cells and one which when taken into the human system is quickly converted into healtfiy living tissue. This phosphate Is already widely known among druggists in this country as Bitro-Phosphate and some physicians claim that through its us strength, energy, vigor and nerve force are frequently increased In two weeks' time. Dr. Frederick Kolle, Edttor of Sew Tork Physicians' "Who's "Who." says It should be prescribed by every doctor and used In every hospital In the United States. As there are a great variety of so-called phosphates, those who wish to test this substance should be sure to get the genuine Bitro-Phosphate. Adv.
