HITCHCOCK STARTS

TREATY SQUABBLE (By Associated Presa) WASHINGTON. Oct 7. The senate Jumped Into a discussion of the peace treaty two hours ahead of its schedule. When the session began. Senator Hitchcock, of Nebraska, leader of the administration forces, of the

Los Angeles branch of the League to

Enforce 'Peace, Eaying among other things that "the people of California were overwhelmingly In favor of the league." References In the telegram to Senator Johnson, Republican, drew sharp comment from Senator Borah, Republican, Idaho.

"Maybe the senator from California will be able to recoup his Republican losses in California by Democratic gains in Massachusetts, said Senator Borah, In asking that the platform adopted by the Democrats of Massachusetts, opposing the league covenant as framed, be put into the record." "Why not insert the platform adopted by the Massachusetts Republicans, which might throw light on this subject?" said Senator Nelson, Republican, Minnesota. Senator Borah did so, and added that notwithstanding the president's wish, there seemed danger of getting the league Into every political arena. Senator Hitchcock declared that in presenting the telegram it wa snot his purpose to show that Senator

Johnson had lost personal following, but that Republicans of high etanding and of every calling, of California, and some of the senator's former campaigu ' managers, repudiated Senator Johnson's action on the league of nations.

GAMBLING STOP AT

AYS PRESIDENT

University Head Scores Gambling Among Students Form Legion. OXFORD, O., Oct. 7. President R. M. Hughes, of Miami University, yesterday gave the men of the institution a call down cn gambling. Ever since the S. T. T. C. of last year there has been a large amount of crap-shooting and betting. One student who could ill-afford it lost $i0 on the world's series a few days ago, and President Hughes heard about it. He says the practice must stop; that they have no right to gamble away their parents' money. Also he called attention to the moral side of the question:

Extensive arrangements are being made at Mliunf "University for the annual homo-coming' of 'the alumni, which will' lake place on Saturday, October 3 8. Miami's football team will play Ohio Wesleyan University here on that day, and it ns expected that 400 to 500 graduates and former students will be here. Orcanize Post. Two hundred Miami students who were in the national service during the recent war are organizing a post of. the American Lesion. The post will bo named after Dillon Watterson, of Kalida, who was killed in the Chateau Thierry battle on July 15, 1918, and was the only Miami boy who actunlly died in action. A chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was installed at Miami University yesterdav, absorbing two local fraternities Phi Alpha I'si and Alpha Delta Bigma. Judge Arthur S. Tuttle, of Detroit, Mich,; (.'apt. Harry Senn, of Cleveland, and William C. I.evere, of Evanston, Ills.,, national officers, had charge of th'j installation ceremonies. The new fraternity has an enrollment of 45 active members and an alumni membership of 102. Plans are already under way to erect a chapter house.

MOWE SHIFTS HIS TEAM FOR WEIGHT

Weight in the backfield will be needed most for the St. Mary's game at Dayton Saturday, thinks Coach Mowe, of Earlham, and he plans to shift the backfield around to get it, Tuesday's practice. Mills goes back to end, Collins, who has been at quarter on the second team, will play that position on the first eleven; Pitts will shift from half to full, and L. Davis and Carter will play the halves. Special attention will be given to the blocking of forward passes ami open formation plays. St. Mary's relies upon this kind of an attack, as she has a light but fast team. This will be the first game of, the season for the Dayton college, and this will be of advantage to Earlham, as the team will have the benefit of its Wittenburg experience.

NO MOVIES, SAYS MINNESOTA COACH

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Oct. 7. With the world's football title decided this week, the eyes of Hoosier sport lovers will turn to the state football classic which will be staged at Indianapolis Saturday, October 18, between the universities of Indiana and Minnesota. The winner of this contest will prove a decided contender for the championship of the western conference, and as both institutions boast teams of unu&ual caliber, a battle royal is predicted. No game in the state this year will bring such a large number of fans to the capital and alumni of Indiana university from all parts of the state, as are planning to attend this contest A peculiar clause barring moving pictures of the game has been inserted in the contract between the two schools at the insistence of Coach Williams of Minnesota. When Coach Stiehm of Indiana was head mentor at Nebraska, his eleven walloped Minnesota, and moving pictures of the contest were shown all over the Missouri valley. Williams was so chagrined over the publicity given his defeat that afterwards he always demanded that no reels should be made of any game in which his men took part.

Claims A gainst Carranza To Be Only $25, 009, QCO WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. Damage claims aaainrt the Carranza government in Mexico will rot amount to more than $25,000,000, the senate subcommittee inveeiicaUrg Mexican con ditions was told Monday by Thomas R. Lill, one of the group of American accountants employed by President Carranza to install an efficiency system for his administration. Mr. Lill referred to a Supreme Court decision to support his own opinion that damages sustained by foreigners in regions controlled by various rebel bands could not be charged to the Carranza government. He was doubtful if claim? presented for damages incurred during the Hit erta administration could 1 e collected from the present government, since Huerta never wasr ecognized by the United States. The estimate of $25,000,000 was baser, Mr. Lill said, on claims made alter revolutions between 1823 and 1S73 Mr. Lill said he was convinced that a large part of the funds handled by Huerta were "tainted with fraud." He cited the payment of 20,000,000 pesos to John W. Dekay, President of the National Packing company of Mexico.

Cool weather put added zest into the R. H. S. graid squad practice at the playgrounds Monday afternoon, and the football aspirants worked at top speed throughout. When Coach Rock called quits for the day, it was a tired, droopy bunch that took a turn around the track and hiked to the clubhouse for a cold shower.

"It will take hard work and lots of j It in order to get the squad in trim for Saturday's game," said Coach Rock, "but the squad is willing and i
