LESSON NO. 30. The Duplex System. There has recently been brought out, a combined high tension magneto and battery system of Ignition, called the Duplex System; which because of its low first cost and simplicity, may be the system of the future. Should the magneto again become as much

hare bn perfected step by step, and how or ft improvement led to another is cleaily seen in the development of the vailous magneto systems of ignition. TJhus we first had the low tension mt.gneto with Its outside coil; then wi) had the high tension magneto, wliich is the result of inventors

observing that the magneto armature

used as it was about two years ago, the Duplex System will be the Bystem most used. It therefore, is entitled to rxplanation. The automobile and its accessories

and its windings could be used in place of tUie coil; next we had the dual system, designed in order to make starting masier, but again making mat

ters complicated and bringing back

the induction coil; and now we have the duplex system, and in this it is plainly seen how the step taken In designing the high tension magneto led to the design of the duplex system; as, here also the Inventor, in

his desire to do away with the Induction coil, observes that the magneto armature has all the parts of an induction coil, and uses It in place of the induction coil of the dual system. Let us develop the duplex system. Again, in Fig. 1, I give you the wiring of the high tension magneto. What we want to do is to connect the battery to the primary of the armature so as to use the armature core, with its primary and secondary windings, in place of the Induction coil. As the magneto primary Is grounded on the one end, we cannot connect to

it on the grounded side of the inter

rupter points, and must therefore con nect between the armature and the in

terrupter. The wire for grounding, to

stop the magneto secondary being gen

erated, is also connected here, so let us simply connect to this wire, as shown by the dotted lines. (Ignore the dot and dash lines for the pres

ent.) Current from Battery.

You will observe that when the in

terrupter points are closed the cur

rent will come from the battery

through wires C and B to the point

F, where It will divide and some go

through A and the armature winding to the point K where this winding is

grounded and so back to the battery;

while the rest will go across the inter

rupter points and so to the ground. As the primary winding of the arma

ture offers a great resistance to the flow of current, while the Interrupter offers practically none, only a little

will go through the winding, and most

ly all through the interrupter. Thts

means that when the Interrupter points are closed the battery current

will have practically no effect, it simp

ly flowing from the battery to the

points, and so back to the battery.

Now let us see what will happen

the moment the interrupter points

open, which is also the moment the

piston of the engine is ready for the spark. As the points re opened the battery current cannot go across them to the ground, and therefore all of the current must go by way of A to the armature winding. Thus you will note that the current

v.lll now be flowing from the battery to the armature coil, as it does in the distributor system, the armature really taking the place of the Induction

coll.

In order to cause an Induction of

a high voltage current in the secondary winding, however, the primory current must be interrupted. Thus,

some device must be added for interrupting this current. The magneto in

terrupter, obviously, cannot be used

for this purpose. The simplest way to overcome this difficulty is to put a vibrator coil similar to those used on your door bell, in the circuit. The dot and dash lines show the course of the current, as It

win now flow, as instead of going from i the battery through the dotted line C it will go through G to the vibrator coll and then through H to B, and so as before. Fig. 2 gives the wiring of the duplex system, with the switch, necessary to stop the engine, or to swing to the battery for starting, and to magneto after starting. Reviewing the action, we find that when the switch is thrown to neutral, the battery circuit is open, as it can only go to the point "2" of the switch, while the magneto primary is grounded, it entering at 1 on the switch, and then passing through 5, 8, 7 and 3, and so to the ground. Thus no high voltage current will be induced in the secondary, and there will be no spark. When the switch is thrown to battery for starting, the segments 1 and 6 of the switch will touch and so will 2 and 5, and you will see that the current can go from H through 2, 5, 6 and 1 to wire B. Thus the current , will flow from the battery through O, then through the vibrator points, through H. then the switch, and finally B. When the interrupter points are closed the current will go through thpm to the ground. The moment they open, however, the current will go through the armature, and so Induce a high voltage current in the secondary winding, and thus e-lv th ronnir.

ed spark. Note how the interrupter

in ljii.) case the segment 1 of the switch will not be in contact with any metal portions of the switch, the point 8 being

auuui. alongside ot it. Thus B is dis

connected, as it should be when running on magneto. As the vibrator makes and breaks the circuit many times in a second, ther will be many shots of high voltage current in the secondary, and so there will be a sort of shower of sparks at the pings. A the lighting system of many cars is such that the battery is not grounded, arrangemnet is usually made on the switch for taking care of this. In this case, instead of the bat

tery being grounded, a wire, as shown by the dotted line, is run to the switch. The vibrator coil and the switch, which are not very expensive, can be very easily connected to any high-

tension magneto. In many cases thefr addition will help to make starting

easy.

Food From Air Is Next Process, Soys Expert NEW YORK, Sept. 27 Food may be obtained from sunlight, air and water, according to a recent discovery of Dr. Winthrop John Vanleuven Osterhout, professor of botany at Harvard university. V The process of the food-making is as yet limited to the laboratory stage.

Prof. Osterhout points out, but It is possible, to place it on a commercial basis. "Analyzing food, we learn that the three chief components are sugar, fat and protein." he said. "Until recent

ly it was impossible to manufacture sugar synthetically, but now we have solved the riddle in several different ways.

Next War is Near,

General Glenn Says CH1LLICOTHE. Ohio. Sept. 27 Declaring that the next war will come

sooner than any one expects Major

General E. F. Glenn, commanding Camp Sherman, today attacked the League of Nations covenant in the

treaty of peace with Germany, asserting that France's condition was not as bad as the French race would have the world to believe. While he insisted that he was first of all an army man and that it was his duty at all times to stand by his government and his flag, he emphasized the fact that he did not desire any officer or man under his command to gain the "erroneous impression that we should help France out at the cost of the perpetual hatred of the German public."
