CITY INDUSTRY HAS STEEL FOR INDEFINITE TIME

General Strike, Unless Prolonged, Will Not Cripple Any Richmond Plants. None of the local manufacturers have bnen hard hit yet by the walkout of steel workers, although a number of local plants will have to suspend

operations If the strike Is In effect for any length of time, according to statements made Friday. George W. Davis, of the Davis Motor Car company, said that his plant was not seriously affected at present and could probably run with the present supply for six or eight months. The Jenkins Vulcan Springs company could run for about 30 days before having to shut down, said T. B. Jenkins, president of the company. The general manager of the ElliottIteld company said this company has no immediate prospect of closing down. Hayes Has Plenty. S. W. Hayes, of the Hayes Track Appliance company, stated that this plant is fortunate in having a good supply of steel on hand, and therefore can run independent of an outside source for at least 2 months. The purchasing agent, H. W. Kinn, of the Richmond Saf pty Gate company, said that probably 30 to 60 days could elapse before it would become necessary there to suspend operations. James Jones, manager of the Reliance Foundry, said that his plant did

iot use an overlarge supply of steel

end it had not been hard hit yet. According to Walter Dunning, pur

chasing agent of the Starr Piano com-

.pany, this concern has laid in, in an

ticipation of the strike, a sufficient amount of steel to keep running until

line first of the year. Hard To Find

' G. A. Fogal, purchasing agent for the (Pilot Motor Car company, stated that

they had already found it hard to

purchase good steel through the regular channels, but they had been able

I to reach a fair 6upply from outside (sources. If the strike is not of unrea

sonable length the company, will see it through, he said. Officials of the K-D .Cabinet comiPany, stated that they had a good supI ply. and were not hit hard yet. This ! official said that the plant would be table to run indefinitely. A number of manufacturers did not want to be quoted by name, said they believed the strike would end in 20 or 30 days.

German Papers Expose New Scheme to Create Army (By Associated Prs WITH THE AMERICAN FORCES IN GERMANY, Sept. 26. An entirely new scheme for establishing a reserve army in Germany in anticipation of some future opportunity to establish German military power is seen by some German newspapers In a plan they have Just discovered and exposed. While the scheme Is confined to only

one regiment and so probably has no

sanction from the War Ministry it is

an indication, in the opinion of American army officers who for eight months

have been studying demobilization of

the German forces, of how hard Prussian militarism dies.

The Lightschlag corps in Westpha

lia, now the Sixty-second Reichswehr

(National Army) regiment of the

Thirty-First Reichswehr brigade, has

sent our circulars to all men who have served In this volunteer unit since the armistice, urging them to sign a pledge to answer to a call to the colors In the event of general disorder or a new revolution. The Freiheit, the Independent Socialist organ in Berlin,

BUKKests that the men responsible for

the scheme really have In mind some

thing more than suppression of disorders.

Air Flight to South ! Pole Planned by Cope . i (By Associated Press) LONDON, Sept. 26. John I Cope,; leader of the expedition to the South ,

Pole to start next June, says his airplane flight to the Pole will be about

750 miles. The base from which the ; airplane will start Is about that dis-l tance from the Pole. The airplane will be heavily loaded. "We shall be compelled to take a; sledge with us and extra provisions to enable us to return In case the air-1 plane breaks down," said Mr. Cope. ' "Because of this additional weight it will be necessary to cut down our own fuel to the minimum.' I

"We propose to set off with as much

petrol as we can and then, half way on the outward Journey Just before we get to a range of mountains that we have to cross, to dump half of it and to pick it up on the way back."
