FRENCH WOMAN GETS SHOCK FROM STYLES OF U.S. SISTERS
PARIS, Bept. 20. Paris has long iliad the reputation of producing "shocking styles, But-according to Mme. Therese Debussan, French writer just back from a tour of the United States the Parlslenne has nothing on the American woman when It comes to "shocking" costumes. The skirt, of course, Is always the barometer- by which the degree of "shockingness" is Judged. And, so Mme. Debussan says, the long, tight American skirt, with Its prevalent slit, is much more shocking than the short, full skirt now the vogue in Paris. Furthermore, the average American woman has no conception of the art of dress but let Mme. Debussan tell all about It in her own "Amerlcanese." Not Such A Frank Revelation. "It is true that in America the skirts reach the ankle, but their tightness forces to open the back or the 6lde, revealing as much of the leg as the shorter Paris skirt, and in not so frank manner. It is true that the afternoon dresses have long sleeves, but many crepe blouses are so transparent that the arms and chest are nicely offered to anybody's look In the streets, the tramcars and other public places. "However, it must be admitted that there is an American practice sensibly differing from ours. It is what you call the 'ready made.' Of course, the American stylish woman who has Jived much in Europe strictly obeys the French mode decrees, but the ready made industry, although many times inspired by our models, adapts end modifies them In accordance to ,the wishes of the home clientele. "A Strange Little Girl" "The chemise dress, which Is tight and short and almost without ornament, gives to the slender and supple Parlslenne the charm of a strange little girl. It could not be worn by the American woman, who Is generally rather tall, with broad shoulders, large gesture and decided walk. The consequence is that she lengthens her klrt because of that not because ehe does not want her legs to be seen. But she also adds draped movement while more marking the waist and bust. And on light dresses she puts basket-like attires that are not very pretty. I believe there Is sometimes as much difference between an American dress and a French as between xl creton flounced ekirt of the Minos iAge and an Athenian tunic four centuries before the New Testament. It is easy to choose. "To be Just let us say that the American woman Is often very well dressed, and that her tailored dresses are excellently cut and carefully made. Totem Poles Disappear Among Indian Tribes
The totem poles are going. Those 1 quaint monuments of a vanishing race i that have made the coast of British Co-1 lumbia and Southern Alaska famous are fast wasting under the influence of wind and weather. j Once the designing and constructing ! of totem poles flourished among the '
Haidas and to a lesser extent among the Tsimpsean Indians. This was long before the white man Invaded the Pacific Northwest. Real totem poles with the history of the tribes and families carved into their odd structure are no longer made and each year sees ome of older ones disappear. Some are til standing in their original positions in the village of Kitwanga, on the Skeena river. Some of these are said to be 200 years old.
