The Automobile Simplified By FREDERICK C. GUERRLICH, M. E. Make This Your Automobile Correspondence School AN intiraate talk on the working units of the automobile discussed In such a way that the laymaa can easily understand them. If In reading these articles, as they appear in the Palladium each Saturday, there is anything not clear to you, ask Mr. Guerllch about it. An answer will be published on the completion of the articles on the section of the automobile under discussion. Copyrighted. 191T, By Frederick C. GuerrUch.

The Low Tension Magneto. The low tension magneto is designed that the current which is generated in the armature winding will be in the neighborhood of six volts. This, of course, is not high enough voltage for plectric pressure to cause the current to jump across the spark points and to give the required spark. For this reason, an induction, or transformer, coil must be used with it, just as these coils must be used with the battery system, the magneto simply taking the place of the battery, and having built on to it the interrupter and distributor. Let us see, therefore, what the wiring will be and trace the current. Lot "A" be the armature core with its coil, and let us regard it as a battery. Then what will we have to do with it In order to get our spark? In the primary circuit we will have to have a switch to shut off the current when wp wish to stop the engine; a coil to change the low tension current, to high tension, and an interrupter to break the current. Thus, in the illustration, the current begins on the armature, then goes to the switch

be a little weak? Why the water would burst through. In the same way, the current of electricity might find some weak insulation and burst through it. Now the size of the coil Is limited by the space which can be allowed for it. and so the thickness of the insulation of the thousands of turns of wire on the coil is limited, and there is a danger of this insulation being broken down. Thus some safety device, or sort of safety valve, must be placed on the circuit. The spark plug air gap is about 1-32 of an inch and the current under a certain voltage will jumy across this gap, but if the gap were greater it would require a greater pressure. Suppose now, we connect a wire to the secondary wire, just after it leaves the coil, and connect this wire to a plug having the points about twice as far apart as the spark plug points. Then the current will have its choice of going either to the spark plugs, or to this other plug, which is called the safety spark gap, but because of the smaller gaps at the spark plugs, it will go to them. Should a wire come

UKRAINIAN WHEAT YIELD WILL FALL SHORT OF DEMAND

(By Associated Press) PARIS. Thursday, Sept. 11 Advices from American Red Cross investigators at Poltava, Southern Russia, re

ceived in Paris today state that reports of an enormous grain surplus in

Ukraine and southern Russia which have disturbed American wheat growers with visions of a tumbling market may be dismissed as groundless. Investigators who have just arrived at Poltava after a tour of the country recently liberated by General Denikine from the Bolsheviki state that early threshings promise a crop from 10 to 25 per cent above, the normal, this being due to the spurring influence of the Germans who directed their energies last fall to having every available foot in Ukraine put into winter wheat. Even this bumper crop however, will fall short of the domestic demand and it is declared that not a bushel of it will ever enter into

Rumors that General Denikine might export wheat to pay for war materials have been met with intense disapproval throughout territory under his control and it is said that such procedure would imperil his hold upon the people. While the food situation is generally good, American doctors connected with the Red Cross units operating in this territory report the medical situation as being precarious. There is a large amount of disease and few hospitals are properly equipped to deal with it.

current starts on the coils. "J" goes to the distributor "L." through the wire "K." and is then distributed to the plugs in the tiring order, returnning through the ground to the coil. The current from a battery will have a uniform voltage or pressure, but the voltage of a magneto will vary with the speed of the rotation, or with the speed of the engine. Thus, at a low engine speed, the voltage will be ciuite low, and at a high engine sliced, comparatively great. Will thn affect the operation of such an extend that devices must be added? It will; for at the cranking speed, the current will have too low a pressure, while at the high engine speed it may. under certain conditions, have so high a pressure as to do damage.
