CHRISTIANITY FACES MENACE, MERCIER HOLDS
Aged Cardinal to Seek Aid in Fighting Evil Influences on Religion. BALTIMORE, Md., Sept. 11. There i3 a deep motive back of the visit of Cardinal Mercier to this country, which was revealed Wednesday when the Belgian prelate reached Baltimore to .visit Cardinal Gibbons. It can be stated authoritatively that he will attend the convocation of Bishops, called by Cardinal Gibbona, September 27, in Washington, at which time he will ask for the good offices of the solidified American churchmen. In removing from stricken Europe the evil influences that are eating the foundations of Christianity. Part of the program includes measures for unifying churchmen of the Teutonic lands in common purpose of teaching christian philosophy. In spite of national prejudice. By way of introducing this subject. Cardinal Mercier, in an interview took occasion to express his utmost faith in the diplomatic policies of the United States, regarding the open discussion of vital international issues. Warns Against Radicals. He warned of the evils of surrepti
tious negotiations and of the terible Influences for evil of the Radical Socialists and Bolshevists who have subsidized the profession of Christ in countries infested by. their insidious doctrines. "The surreptitious diplomacy of the past," he said, "is passing away, though slowly, under the magic wand of the open methods of the new democracy. The old school diplomats must have believed that they had the gift of speech for the purpose of concealing their thoughts, and (with a smile) on the basis of logic, he might infer that the apparent undying affection which they profess for each other is a mark of their critical attitudes. No better example of this can be had than the diplomacy of the Germans And this diplomacy will never die so long as the military party is allowed to exist. Germany is not crushed. Her armies are defeated, her arms are laid down, but the Prusian spirit survives."
Car Shortage at Mines Causes Acute Situation TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Sept 11 The car shortage situation in the Indiana coal field has become so acute in the last two weeks that producers are falling far behind in the filling of orders, according to a statement of the Indiana Bituminous Coal Operators" Association. It is claimed that many orders are being refused because of the lack of shipping equipment. A statement by General Director of Railroads Hines imputing to coal" operators an intention to exploit the car shortage as a means for raising prices, was read with amazement by Indiana operators. The operators point out that hey are not only behind on their orders, but on orders that are on their books at an agreed price that is tc say, at a price fixed before the car shortage became acute. Coal production at the present time is not in any sense a question of price, but of delivery, and if the present transportation situation continues, the production will continue to be greatly curtailed at a time when every ton of coal that can be brought out of the ground Is needed, according to the statement.
