BATHING GIRLS AS USHERS FORBIDDEN BY CHICAGO CHIEF
CHICAGO, Sept. 5. And what was that which flitted by? A nymph, a water sprite, a mermaid, a fairy of the seas. She pranced up the aisle, her tresses blowing to the breezes from prosaic electric fans. White feet pattered against the carpeted floor, while shimmering limbs were outlined against the darkness. Thoughts of the stage were forgotten while necks were craned for fleeting, haunting glimpses. "Show you to a seat, sir," said the little maid In a bathing suit that would make confirmed beach devotees look a second time. Took Seat, Then Peep. "I guess you may," answered the rather portly Individual In civilian clothes, drifting In apparently to while away an Idle hour. "How about the bald-headed row?" she smiled, noticing a little sparsity on the crown. "I believe I'll sit further back," was the rather curt comment. The demure little miss In abbreviated attire fox trotted to the nearest seat, and with a grandiose air motioned the Ziegfeld Theater's latest guest to It. She then frolicked away to greet the next sightseer. The portly guest watched procedings for a moment and then moved uneasily in his chair. Then he proceeded to the box office. Shining Star Appeared. "Where's the manager?" he asked. T. S. Havlll appeared. The visitor threw back his coat lapel, the star of the chief of police of the city of Chicago appearing. "My name Is Oarrlty," he said by way of Introduction. "Have those girl ushers put some more clothes on. They might catch cold these hot days and summer colds are bad. Besides, the public doesn't like It. Keep your bathers on the stage!" The Ziegfeld manager protested, but Chief Garrity was obdurate. The upshot was that the bathing girl ushers, whom the management had introduced by way of additional attraction at the display of Mack Sennett's bathing beauties, went back to the conventional clothes. Bathing Peaches for Beaches "There's a place for everything," Chief Garrity commented today on the order. "I'm a3 liberal as anyone in the matter cf freedom of dress. I don't believe in wearing a winter outfit when you go swimming. But bathing suits are for bathing peaches on bathing beaches and not for theater aisles. If they want to put "em on the stage, that's a different matter."
Winter on Mars Forecasts Winter Weather on Earth
(William Joseph Showalter In the National Geographic Magazine.) It is quite generally believed that Mars has ice-capped poles. The telescope reveals white spots at the poles that have every appearance of being like our ocean Polar region. The advance toward the equator in winter and retreat in summer. . In the summer of 1916, Pickering, who, with Lowell, has led the school of astronomers who believe they can see canals on Mars, said that he found the white caps stretching farther down toward the equator than he had ever seen them before. He said that
if there was any connection between the weather of Mars and that of the earth, the winter of 1916-17 would be the coldest in many years. And it was. May it yet be possible to do long ranges weather forecasting on the earth by studying the waxing and waning of the ice cap on the South Pole of Mars?
Big Racoon Disposes Of Many Chickens (Philadelphia Record) GREENSBURG, Pa.. Sept. 5. The mystery of the disappearance of many of his fine fowls was solved when Clem Lauffer, near Harrison City, went to his henhouse and was surprised to find lying dead a big raccoon, and standing over him triumphantly crowing, one of his line big roosters. The supposition is that the rooster, hearing a commotion among the younger poultry, investigated, and vanquished the intruder after a vicious battle. Mr. Lauffer had fifteen half-grown chickens and sixteen ducks
killed berore tne raiaer met nis aoora. Detroit and Cleveland both claim fourth place among American cities in the net census, having admittedly displaced St. Louis, which was fourth, and Boston which was fifth.

abundance of charm, and beauty and
effervescent personality gives a delightful characterization of Alice Chesterton, an entrancing, vivacious, little "baby vamp" whose entire life seems to be spent In getting in and out of scrapes. At a house party in the fashionable Ives country home at Iveshurst, Long Island, Alice delights in a desperate flirtation with Terry O'Keefe, a gay son of Ireland with a captivating brogue, much to the chagrin of her fiance, Tom Carey. But to Alice, man is life, and flirtations food.
Terry tells Alice that he must run
up to town for a few days and she with a wise twinkle in her eye says nothing. Terry is surprised when he arrives at his club in town to receive a phone call from Alice, who tells him that she also has come Into the city and shyly asks him to take her out to dinner. The dinner under her beguiling ways grows into a regular celebration. At the Roof, where they finish their little party with afew dances, Mr. Ives and a business associate are dining. When he arrives back at Iveshurst the next morning he tells the family where and with whom he saw Alice. The family are shocked and grieved, especially Tom Carey. They had thought that Alice was at a party at a girl friend's house and was to remain over night. Although it has been an entirely innocent affair, Tom and Terry nearly come to blows when the latter appears later in the day. Alice arrives alone still later and
laughingly receives the scolding words which are hurled at her. While Alice is dressing, her sister, Betty, disheveled and limping, as the result of an automobile accident, puts in her appearance. Mrs. Ives tells her about Alice's escapade and suggests that she try and charm the charming Terry. So Betty is carried back to the overturned car and placed In an entrancing position to be rescude by Terry, who has been sent for by the chauffeur. And Terry is caught by the bait. It's
a case of love at first 6ight. That
night he asks Betty to marry him. She consents; but when she tells Alice.
