LAY PLANS FOR DEFEAT OF SOX With Bis Lead and Season's Close Near, World Series Talk's in Air.

ST. LOUIS. Sept. 5. After dispos- j Ing of on pennant grabing team, the ! Reds will mix with St. Louis today in j the opener of a four game series. The j Reds defeated the champions of the I Three Eye league at Bloomington yes-! terday afternoon, before a large and j

enthusiastic crowd. New York moved up a half a notch, by defeating the Dodgers, 6 to 1. A little thing like a half a game means nothing to Pat Moran's dashing players, however, and the Reds are determined to make the series with the Cards one of their biggest feats. Slim Sallee is the only pitcher that the Cardinals have been able to solve to any great extent, and they have never defeated either Ring or Fisher. Ferdie Schupp and Leon Ames are the only St. Louis hurlers that have ever made an impression against the Red hitting. The performance of Hank Schreiber on the hot corner, since the accident to Heinle Grch, is one of the most pleasing features of the Reds' play during the past week. Groh was considered the keystone of the Red3' defense, and his hitting was greatly de pended upon. His injury, which has forced him out of the game temporarily, was looked upon as a heavy blow to the Reds, but Schreiber has taken his place In a very pleasing manner and has contributed strongly both to the Reds' defense and their attack. What Are Chances? With most of the National league teams out of the way, the Reds are Involuntarily looking forward to their meeting with an American league team, and eeem to pick Chicago as the best bet. Illinois fans are of the opinion that the Reds have a very small chance against Cicotte and Williams and the remainder of Gleason's crew, but the TJpHh ficiir that thpv will hA nhlp til

make as strong a showing against the American league champs as they have against their own league teams. Manager Moran is making every effort to keep the team's efforts centered on winning the remainder of the games in the National league schedule, but with a seven and a half game lead, and practically every fan in the middle west howling for world series

tickets at Cincinnati, the team naturally has Btarted figuring on world i

eeries efforts.

Seats on Sale For Cincinnati Games The Reds play their next Sunday game at Cincinnati, on September 14. Reserved seats for this game, which will be against Boston, may be purchased now at the Palladium office. Seats are also on sale at the Palladium for the final series of the season against the Giants, on September 15 and 16. Seats for the world series games have not been placed on sale, and President Herrmann has announced that no orders for series tickets will be received until the Reds have illnched the pennant. Orders for series seats will be filled by the Palladium as rapidly as possible after the seat sale Is opened.

Everette Haas, star catcher, who played with the A. S. M. earlier in the season and to whom much of their earlier success was due, has returned to Richmond and will be in the lineup Saturday, when the A. S. M. plays the Swayne-Robinson. The addition of Haas has perked up the spirits of the Seeder rooters and a large crowd is expected to turn out. The Starr Piano nine hooks up with the Wayne Works in the second con

test, and a good battle is promised. Sturm, who will pitch against the Quakers in Sunday's game with Centerville, will be seen on the mound for the Piano makers, and Madge or Don Long will hurl for the W. W. team. These games will be the last of the regular schedule. If both the leaders win, a special game must be played to decide the 1919 champion. The dope bucket may be upset and one of the tail-enders may trim the leaders however. Two silver trophies are on display in Sam Vigran's window, one of them a loving cup to be given to the S. A. L. winners. The other trophy will be given to the leading pitcher. After growing for ten years, the

Sherwood Magee, Real Veteran, Waits Many Seasons to Play on Pennant Winning Team

Everything comes to him who waits, some one has said. All well and good. But if anyone had told Sherwood Magee back in 1904 that he would have to wait until he Joined the Cincinnati Reds to get onto a pennant winning ball club he would have burst forth in loud and racuous guffaws. Magee is one of the veterans of te big leagues, as well as the National circuit. He broke into the big show back in 1904 with the Philadelphia Nationals, from Allentown, Pa. For eleven seasons he gave the Phils all the baseball he had in him in an effort to help them' land a pennant. But they fizzled every year. In 1914 the Boston Braves were miracle manned into the world series, you undoubtedly recall. The following spring Magee was traded to the Braves for Ducey, Whitted and a leather bag full of coin. Magee was tickled silly. It looked as though he was slated to break into a world series as the Braves appeared able to repeat. But the Braves didn't repeat, and it was Magee's old team, the Phillies, that copped the bunting. Sherwood stayed with the Braves three seasons until the Brave owners decided he was through and asked for waivers ton him. The Reds refused to waive and Magee, sad-eyed and dejected, packed his belongings and hied himself to the city of forlorn hopes. Last year and this season, he has been a sort of general utility man, playing the outfield, shortstop or first base creditably. If he doesn't break into the series he will be in on the cash. Moran at least will count on him as a second defense man in case of injury to any of the regulars. But whether or not he breaks into the lineup matters not quite so much to Sherwood as does the fact that he has finally had thev sensation of being on a pennant-winning club.

White Sox Opening Big Series With Cleveland

CHICAGO, Sept. 5. With the local team six and one-half games in the. lead, the Chicago White Sox and Tris Speaker's Cleveland Indians were ready today to open a three game series which will have an important bearing upon the final outcome of the -nee for the American League pennt. Both clubB were idle yesterday d the rival managers said today that

their men were ready for the opening battle. Manager Gleason of the Sox announced that both of his pitching stars Cicotte and Williams were ready after long rests. Dick Kerr, who has been showing to good advantage in his recent starts, probably will draw the assignment for the odd game. Detroit yesterday gained a '.ill'

game on the leading Sox and their

trailing rivals, the Cleveland club, when they defeated St. Louis. Should the Sox and the Tigers win their games today Cleveland will drop to third place.

Germans Refuse to Transport Animals CBy Associated Press COBLENZ, Sept. 5. Fourteen hundred Polish soldiers who came to the American area for the purpose of transporting to Poland six thousand horses and mules which were purchased from the United States army are being held up indefinitely near this city by Germany's refusal to undertake supervision of hauling troops and animals across Germany by rail. The Germans hold that the shortage of coal and lack of locomotives makes

the task impossible under present conditions. Germany is required to facilitate the passage across Germany of allied trains and military material intended for the Polish army, the peace terms making this stipulation. The question of Germany's refusal to move the Pol-, isn troops and animals has been referred to the allied commission in Paris. The six thousand horses and mules constitute the last of eleven thousand animals cold the Poles by the United States liquidation commission, v

Centerville Slow to Announce Line-up For Championship Contest Except for the addition of Gib Hunt on first, the Quaker line-up against Centerville Sunday will be the same one that played Indianapolis Labor day, Manager Vigran ash announced. Centerville has not announced her line-up as yet, and it Is believed the

! management are "loading up" and

have not the team complete. As returns of the Cincinnati-St. Louis games will be read, the fans will be enabled to watch the fight for the National League championship and the scrap for the championship of Wayne county at the same time.
