WILLIAMS GETS $6,045 FROM 41 HEAD OF HOGS Big Type Poland Chinas Bring Good Prices at Williamsburg Sale. By WILLIAM R. 8ANB0RN. If you are a Big Type China fancier and were present at the Frank A. Williams Mid-Summer Sale, near Williamsburg, on Monday, you either arrived very early and secured a seat, or found the performers playing to standing room only. The new vitrified tile sales pavilion was packed to the doors before the sale opened, and a number of Big Type men were present from outside states, or were represented by the auctioneer or field men. $6,045 was paid for 41 head. Jumbo Giantess, dating from August, 1917, was the first to show, followed by Defender Maid, Giantess Clara, Miller's Maid and Victoria L. These five prime favorites being disposed of, the sale was on to a finish. What Topllners Brought. Jumbo Giantess, the first to find a new home, is not to leave Wayne county, Walter Fulghum insured that by paying $250 for her. Defender Maid will also remain in Wayne among her
relatives in the Jones and Pike collection at Centerville; consideration $300. John Meeks, of Shelbyville, Indiana, invested $250 in Giantess Clara and $310 in Miller's Maid, and was therewith content. Victoria L., was shaded a fraction Ly W. F. Parks, of KItchell, Indiana, w ho secured his prize for $205. When Fairfield Maiden showed Jones and Pike went gunning for her at an expense of $310. These Bix were the topliners of the collection. Numbers 39 and 40 to sell, twin gilts, farrowed November 18th, looked so good to C. D. Keller, of La Crosse, Ind., that he bid $145 for choice and took both at the sale money. These were awaiting registry when the catalog was compiled. Number 11, Fairfield Kate, a yearling, cost Porter Pike $195, while Leader Lass, also a yearling, cost W. G. Brawley, of New Paris, $170. J. L. Dyer, of Madisonville. Tenn., also spent exactly $70 for Fashion Queen, while J. A. Shelton, an Indianian, climbed up to $215 for Fairfield Queen, a full sister to Mr. Johnson's purchose. Johnson Quigg, of Winchester, was among the high bidders, paying $250 for Fairfield's Lady and was also awarded Model Lady for just half that nionev. J. D. Woodward, of Jonesvilie, Virginia, paid $170 for Nancy Crow, his top purchase. Among the Indiana men who spent a few dollars at this sale were: B. A. Ricks, Lewisville, $75 for Big Imperial; E. A. Rumple, of Fern. $145 for Big Lady Longfellow; John Painter, of Sprlngport, $200 for Fairfield's Chief Lady; and J. A. Pyle, of Richmond, $93 lor Hawthorn's Bob Wonder. Side Lights on the Sale. W. D. Brawley, of New Paris, was a persistent bidder and picked up three, Fashion Defender at $100 being the lowest in price. Walter Fulghum said he was present te pick a few to match King Prospect, for which he recently paid Wood Eliason $1,000 at private sale, also to put in his own initial sale in October. Col. Joe Fletcher, Dunkirk, Indiana, was auctioneer in chief, and was assisted by Colonel Tom Conniff, Richmond, and Oren Ross, of Winchester, in the sales ring. Porter Pike, of Centerville. was the efficient clerk of the sale and seemed to know every bidder In the pavilion. Frank Taylor, of the First National, was cashier. Commissioner Poper announced today that the Bureau of internal Revenue would not answer inquiries relative to proposed business ventures, but would pass on completed transactions only. TOLEDO James Dusha, a contractor, was shot here by three men who escaped after his son grappled with them in the rear of the Dusha home. COLUMBUS Alleging that Carter M. Wright, 24, to whom she became engaged while in high school, Jilted her and married an English noblewoman, Helen M. Compton, 23, has filed suit against him for $25,000 for breach of marriage contract. Wright graduated from Purdue university and was Bent to England to look after the interests of the Oliver Plow company there and married there a girl of English nobility. CHILLICOTHE The escape of 21 German prisoners from Camp Sherman will be investigated by a board of officers recently appointed, and the responsibility for the escape must be fixed, according to an order by the commandant of the cantonment. All except two have been captured. MIDDLETOWN As the result of an explosion of a toy cannon with which he was playing, the fourteen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Isoley will lose the sight of one eye. COLUMBUS A fee of $20,000 was turned into the state treasury when the American Rolling Mill company increased its capitalization from $217500,000 to $41,500,000. NEWARK The first plea of guilty of violation of the Smith cold storage law in the state's war on food profiteering was obtained here when Richard Holmes, manager of the Newark Ice and Cold Storage company, pleaded guilty to having operated his plant without a license. TOLEDO Jennie Brodsky, 19, is dead, Mrs. Benjamin Rosenberg is believed to be dying, and five other persons are suffering from serious injuries, as a result of the collision of the speeding motor car In which they were riding, with a terminal railroad locomotive.
