Attraction at the Horse ShowIndianapolis News Boys' Band

By William R. Sanborn WHY travel to the mountains or seashore to have a jolly good time when such a live little burg as Hagerstown is planning for the Greatest Show on Earth, of its kind. All of Indiana, as much of Ohio as can get there, and citizens everywhere, from coast to coast, are invited to come and make merry and to share in the hospitality of this Hoosier city in the heart of Old Wayne. They admit at Hagerstown that to entertain the whole United States would be a pretty large order, but you see the show lasts several days and it is not expected that all will arrive in town on the same day or days. Besides, the politicians at Washington are too busy to be present, and there are numerous people in all the great cities who will be unable to get away; still others everywhere who are out gunning for the high cost of living, and therefore cannot come until a more convenient season, say when the railroads have very properly been turned back to their owners and travel is less expensive. Again, and we hate like sin to admit it, there are actually people in this country who have never heard of

Hagerstown, or even of Wayne county, more's the pity, and it is now too late to mail all such special invitations and free transportation. But mark you. Hagerstown will take care of the crowds. You will find the doors of the homes propped open, with door keys thrown into the wells, until the crowds have come, been hospitably and charmingly entertained, a? the society editor would write it, and have gone to their homes, delighted with the experiences of th week.

GOING TO BE SOME SHOW What the dickens are they going to do and to show at Hagerstown ? Go easy, young man, do you expect us to write a book ? Really no need for doing so, as the Committee on Entertainment has already printed one and you can get a copy free for ;he asking, or by going after it. When you have secured your copy, and have lain awake all night to read it. you will wonder that such a little city, a town of actually less than a million people, would attempt to put on such a show and to back it with a guarantee in cold cash, if cash is ever cold in August. But get ready to go to Hagerstown and spend at

least two days, if not fixed to motor home of evenings; in which case you will be expected to come daily to enjoy the occasion to the full. The show is to be run 18 hours per day the best time to see it being between the hours of nine in the morning and midnight. You can sleep and eat the balance of the time, without being unduly criticised as a slacker. Spend a part of your vacation at Hagerstown, young man, and if your vacation joys are already past for 1919, take another vacation. This is the sage advice of those who will not only run the show, but who are already running the town, and they know what's what.

the Hagerstown Free Fair and Horse Show are not to blame for this. Had the site of Hagerstown lain in the Valley of the Mesopotamia river near Ararat or Mount Sinai, it would have cut more ice in history. But let that pass. Hagerstown proposes to enjoy today and to build for the future, and to take care of and amuse the people now on earth.

HAGERSTOWN IN HISTORY We understand that Hagerstown is an historic old place but has by no means fallen asleep because of old age. So near as we can ascertain, the present site of this enterprising burg was here when Noah climbed down from Ararat after the cloudburst, but there was so much land lying around, and so few to occupy and till it, that it was not until several years after Noah that there set in a demand for Indiana farms and town sites. But the folks who aie to run

FREE FAIR AND HORSE SHOW The statement that Hagerstown is to put on a Free Fair and Horse Show barely hints at the many attractions to be offered. Not only is there to be a Horse Show but also a Cattle Show, and, far removed from either, ladies and gentlemen, there is also to bo a Baby Show, an exhibit of vast importance to doting mothers and also to grandmothers. Frank WhiteseH, , vice president of the fair association, is in charge of this show, and is widely known as a judge of handsome, healthy, cooing babies. Mr. Whitesell makes no discrimination between boys and girls, and will impartially see that the first prize baby boy gets as large a cash premium award as the first prize baby (Continued oa Page Sixteen)
