PAGE THREE'

(Continued from Page Two) It Is all about the efforts of a false Mend to elope with his old pal's pretty wife and of how he Is punished. Fun? Imagine a perfectly good situation twisted Into the most absurdly hand of that master of comedy Mack Sennett. Imagine beauty and burlesque Intermingled with a lavish hand and excruciating happenings portrayed by the most accomplished comedians that can be found in the country. imagine these things and the average picture-goer will realize that a performance like this is a distinct novelty, also a decided treat. A Mack Sennett comedy is like a tonic to Jaded nerves. The famous tired business man, the grouch, the morose individual, the cynic, the misanthrope, the pessimist, the anchorite

one and all, will mingle their laughter with that of the ordinary folk who

are inclined to jollity. Charlie Chaplin's clothes have played no small part in making him the world's greatest comedian, and nowhere Is his ability to dress in a manner grotesque and bizarre shown more effectively than in "Sunnyside," his newest million dollar First National attraction, which will be seen at the Washington Theatre, starting Sunday. In this, the third of Mr. Chaplin's million dollar pictures, he has the part of a man of all work about a rural hotel, with opportunity at times to fuss around the hotel proprietor's farm, when he has nothing more press ing. He is in love with Edna, the pretty daughter of a farmer who lives near by. He seems likely to win her for his wife, as she sympathizes with the overworked little hotel assistant, when a great disaster happens.

A young city man, finely dressed, appears in the hamlet of Sunnyside

with a shining automobile and the most fascinating of smiles. His machine needs slight repairs, and while waiting for these to be completed he decides that he will stay at the hotel, which is called the "Evergreen" because it has a good crop of grass growing in the lobby. While the smart young man from the city is waiting about Sunnyside, his eye falls on Edna. Immediately he begins to use his wiles on her. Being an unsophisticated country girl, Edna cannot resist the "city fellow,'' and soon she is returning his attentions to the point where Charlie is very miserable. He sits down to think it over, and decides that the way to beat out the dressed up young man is to dress up himself. This he does, and makes such an effect as only Charlie Chaplin can achieve. Constance Talmadge is like some

rare painting; the more you see of

her, the greater your admiration. Miss

Talmadge opened a two-day run at the Washington Theatre Friday, in a new Select comedy plus drama, "The Veiled Adventure," in which she Is presented by Lewis J. Selznick. After viewing her efforts in a half dozen or so preceding plays, the current one seems to go just a trifle farther in establishing the versatility of this charming Select star. In "The Veiled Adventure," a highly entertaining and novel story has been built around a grey chiffon veil which Geraldlne Barker found in the overcoat pocket of her fiance, who was recognized among the smart set as the "catch of the season." Geraldlne had consented to become his wife more in order to gain a triumph over the other society beauties than for any other reason. In fact, as the plot develops, she discovers that the veil belongs to Mile. Hortense, a beauty expert with whom he is going about, and she becomes doubtful as to whether she really loves the man sue is to marry- She becomes a beauty expert herself.

meets Richard Annesly and changes her views of life and men. "The Veiled Adventure" has a swiftly moving plot with smiles and laughs throughout. Constance Talmadge, it would seem, never falls to please her audience, a circumstance which may be due to the fact that there is something charmingly "different" about her personality and characterizations. The production was directed by Walter Edwards and to 'Julia Crawford Ivers are credited both the original story and the scenario, which are excellent. Harrison Ford plays oppo site Miss Talmadge and gives an excellent characterization of the man from Texas, who didn't have much faith in women. Blanche Bates, the celebrated 6tage star, has scored an emphatic triumph in her first appearance In motion pictures as co-star with Hobart Bosworth, eminent screen player. In "The Border Legion," a vivid picturization of Zane Grey's famous story, which Gold-

wyn presents at the Washington Theatre, beginning Wednesday. , The role of Joan Randall, a daring girl of the West, gives Blanche Bates wider Bcope for her fameddramatic talents than even the character she portrayed in "The Girl of the Golden West," the stage production that won her world-wide fame as a Belasco star. New York reviewers as well as the picture public proclaimed Miss Bates' debut on the screen a brilliant success when "The Border Legion" was presented to crowded houses at the Strand Theatre, New York. Heart-throbbing incidents have the daring Joan as their central figure after she Is taken captive by Jack Kells (Hobart Bosworth), leader of the band of desperadoes, that has for years looted the mining camp where Joan lived, oan is overpowered by Kells while on her way to the bandits' lair to reclaim her sweetheart, Jim Cleeve, who has joined the outlaws after Joan breaks with him because of his ehift-lessness.

HIS FIRST MILLION DOLLAR PICTURE SINCE "SHOULDER ARMS"

Down on the farm this time with Charlie. Down with the cows and chickens. But the chickens seem to know all the new aesthetic dance steps and Charlie becomes a desert Pan. It has been six monthts since "SHOULDER ARMS" was presented, and those six months have been devoted to making "SUNNYSIDE" full of original comedy, big surprises and continuous laughter.
