DOCTOR EDWARDS ADDRESSES FRIENDS' WORK CONFERENCE
President David M. Edwards of Earlham college, delivered addresses on "The Quaker Message and the Open Door," "The Quaker Forward Movement, its Plan and Scope." and an address on "The Stewardship of Life" at the Ministers' and Workers' conference of the Friends church at Splceland this week. Consideration of the plans and the methods of the Friends Forward Movement, was the feature of the conference. Service to the fullest extent was pointed out by speakers as the outstanding point of the movement. One of the most Important steps growing out of the conference was the adoption of a resolution to be sent to the Yearly Meeting, the essence of which was that a fund be provided for granting long time loans, without interest, to students preparing for service in the Friends church. Professor Homer Morris of the Earlham college economics department, addressed the conference Wednesday morning on "The Church and the Social Gospel," discussing the social order of this country and the part Friends might play in the social program. Clarence Pickett, general secretary of the Young Friends board, Ross A. Hadley, general secretary of the Foreign Mission board of Friends, and the Rev. Andrew F. Mitchell of the South Eighth Street Friends church, were also on the conference program. Taggart Made Head Of Niles, Mkh.f High School Harold E. Taggart, son of Mr-, and Mrs. J. E. A. degree the following year and received a teacher's recommendation. Taggart came back to, Earlham in 1918 to fill the unexpired term of Prof. Harlow Lindley. He remained in this position only a month and then entered the service. He was stationed at Camp Taylor and received a commission as second lieutenant. His discharge was received last Dec ; bcr and in February he went to . L. S. Walker, of this city, who t;u-.hr in the Garfield Junior high school last year, will have charge of the athletic and physical training work and mathematics at Niles. British To Give Nation's Mandatories Precedents (By Associated Press) LONDON. Wednesday. July 9. The rouse of commons today adopted an i'mendment to the finance bill, moved by J. Austen Chamberlain, chancellor of the exchequer, giving the govern ment power, by an order in council to extend colonial preference to any territory of which any portion of the British empire may become a mandator under the league of nations. The vote was 195 to 5S. During the course of the debate James Myless Hogge, Liberal, contended that this policy would sow dissention among the nations because the covenant of the league of nations rromises equal trade and commercial opportunities in those territories. He atkrd whether, if the United States should be given the mandate for Conrtsntinople, the other members of the league would be liable, as regards city, to the United States fiscal f y-ie;n. ir Donald MacLean also protested : :-";'iri.-t t he amendment, but Sir Auckland Ceddes, minister of national service and reconstruction, replied that hat the government would be empowered to do would not be contrary to anything in the covenant. In experimenting with soap bubbles an English scientist developed an apparatus that blew them large and substantial enough to be used as backgrounds for photographs.
