Chinch Bugs Threaten Greene County Corn INDIANAPOLIS. Ind.. July 8 Millions of chinch bugs are threatening the destruction of the corn crop in Greene County, according to Frank N. Wallace, state entomologist, who returned yesterday from a visit to the stricken area. The pest is said to be one of the moBt destructive of the Insects that visit this section of the country. Wallace said the presence of the bug was first discovered by Jacob lies of Lyons, who reported the fact to M. B. Wright, county agent of Greene County. Wright requested Mr. Wallace to visit the sections of the county threatened by the pest in order to suggest means for gaining control of the situation. Mr. Wallace said the insects are present in amazing numbers and that un
less the ravages are checked at once serious damage will result to the corn crop. He said the pest is at present attacking the district of Greene County known as the Bee Hunter Marsh. The bugs have caused serious damage in Illinois but the Greene County visitation is the first 6erious attack made by the insects upon the crops of Indiana. The bug Is very small, being about one-fifth of an inch long. It is dark brown In color in the adult stage, while the young are red. The insect attacks all kinds of grasses and usually comes to corn after the wheat is cut, Mr. Wallace said.
Gillilan "Bawled Qui" Audience, Then Saw Garter Festooning Ankle
it
By STRICKLAND GILLILAN. (From the Lyceum Magazine.) I suppose every horrible thing has to happen to every platform man at least once. And it had to be that at least once a garter had to come loose and festoon itself pestiferously and visibly over one of my well-developed Ohio feet. This happened at Fort Collins, Colorado, only a couple of months ago, and I am still internally miserable over it, tho I hope I got away with it well enough that night to convince my hearers and see-ers that I did that every night and didn't mind it a particle. I had no friendliness of any kind shown me in advance by the Fort Collinsers, and was feeling 'right blue when I went on the platform, because the man to whom I was directed on going there, had come to the doorkeeper and said: "Has Gillilan come?" "Yes. he's sitting right there," pointing at me with one corner of his head. Part of Furniture. I was sitting there beside the doorkeeper because no other room was lighted, and I had no place to sit. and nobody had even spoken to me when I came in just looked. The committeeman stood and looked at me a moment, as if I were a piano that had been rented for the evening, didnot speak and went back to his seat. You know how that sort of thing makes one feel friendless in a strange land. I had been given so very much courtesy the night before at Greeley that the Fort Collins chill cut to the bone. The audience was a fine one. Down to my right were a lot of as fine and good-looking girls as a fellow sees in a lifetime. They were intelligent looking also, which is not the inevitable accompaniment of good looks yea. verily! But they were giggling.
I didn't blame them much, for I knew I was something of a freak in appearance. But they didn't get over their giggle when I got over being new to them. I worked into a serious bit, and Jhe giggle persisted. I turned to the two most violent gigglers and said: What I am now saying isn't funny. I may have to stop frequently during the evening to tell you whether it is funny or not." Pretty raw crack what? The girls colored and looked hurt, but were still amused. A little later on I sprung an anticlimax, and remarked: "Wasn't that a come-down, tho?" Just then I noticed that a pale blue no-metal-can-touch-you was festooned over my left foot. Then I saw everything in a flash. I wanted to die, but I had to finish that lecture. I remarked quickly: "Whoa, there! Another come-down. Girls, I know what you were laughing at! I don't blame you, and I hope you'll forgive me." I reached down, unhooked the offending elastic, put it in my pocket and went on with my work. Next day, in the paper, I apologized even more publicly, and did all I could to make amends. But I shall never forget the humiliation of that loose garter or the disgrace of bawling somebody out for my own shortcoming. I am not a Knight of the Garter, but that was my night of the garter, all right.
