STOWAWAY TAKES TRANS-SEA TRIP WITH R-34 GREW

Aviator Refused Permission to Make Trip Hides in Great Dirigible. . MINEOLA. N. Y., July 7 Refreshed by a bath, some of the officers of the R-34 consented to speak briefly of the history-making voyage. Major O. Herbert Scott, commander of the airship, said: "The voyage was a very enjoyable and most successful one. The total mileage was 5,364 miles and we cov

ered that distance in 108 hours and 12 minutes. "The thunder storms and squalls which we encountered caused the delay. I do not expect the return trip to take mora than 70 hours. "There was a crewv of 30 men aboard. We all were in fine shape when we landed. But we had only gasoline enough to last three or four hours more, and you can see we were very fortunate. "Six hours after we had left East Fortune, Scotland, a stowaway was found aboard. His name is W. W. Ballantine and he lives In Cromwell, England. Change in Crew. "At one time he was a member of our crew, but when we completed arrangements for this trip it was decided not to take him on board for various reasons which I do not now wish to disclose. "When the Btowaway was found, of course we did not wish to drop him off, so we put him to work, and he did his share of the work on the voyage. He will not make the return trip but will remain here, and in the near future I expect he will be Court-martialed, but I do not think he will be subjected to any severe punishment. "The only change in the crew on the way back will be the addition of Lieutenant Commander W. A. Hensley, of the United States Naval Air Service, who will take the place of Commander Zachary Lansdowne.
