ANNIE GETS AN INVITATION "Ob. mother! mother! " Annie Bhouted, bureUng Into the Haxgan kitchen that night, waving her ten-dollar bill "I'm a human being, dear! Not a machine any longer, not Just a cog in a wheel to be driven and driven!" Aunt Margaret had a windfall that week, too. An author gave her a manuscript to type. It meant a little financial margin for them all. To cel
ebrate the new glory and the promise
that sang in her heart of even better
success to come, Annie dared buy Herself a blouse, a flimsy, fussy, pretty
thing, prettier than any she had ever
stitched in her factory. Regarding it in its noble pasteboard
box. all dalntied up with pink tissue
paper, Annie thought suddenly of Miss Wells and Settlement House and the
mortifying memory of her wild dream there.' Little shadowy longings began to creep out like ghosts. Work wasn't
everything She shut the waist in its box and
shoved it under her bed. She wore it to the office Saturday. All the girl3 "dressed up" a little then and most of them had engagements for the half holiday. It was a bright warm Sep
tember day. Simms had actually
stayed at home for an elderly gentle
manly game of golf, and the office re
laxed a bit more than usual.
The telephone burred, and when Annie stuck the plug in (she never
got them twisted any more) and
listened, a youthful, feminine voice asked, "la Mr. Brady there V
"Mr. Brady V puzzled Annie, with a
crease between her eyebrows. "Are
you sure he's with this office Slmms
k. Oreutt?" "Oh, yes!" came the answer. "Mr. Chester Brady'Chef "
Annie laughed outright, "diet," the office factotum! To think of sixteen year old "Chet" being "Mister Brady"
to somebody!
Mr. Chester Brady was duly called and asked his fair friend to "hold the
wire." With dignity he strode Into ! Simms's private room to an accompaniment of clerkly titters. So even Chet had a "date" for the afternoon, mused Annie wistfully, as the girls began to close their desks and prink before the mirror. She had some work to finish, and was still tapping the typewriter when a voice beside her made hef look up. "Shouldn't work after the whistle blows; you'll be put out of the union!" It was a good-natured, harmless youth. Bernard Carroll, who was employe in thde order department, and had often exchanged pleasantries with Annie. "Bernie" was a dapper -young person to whom every new face In the office was an adventure. "Didn't expect to be caught by a walking delegate," Annie smiled, tapping off the finishing words of her letter. She knew this belated mark of Mr. Carroll's esteem was because
of her new modish blouse. "Speaking of walking," pursued Bernie, "why dont we move on out of here and walk to the Staten Island ferry? It's a nice little sail on a day like this." "AH right," said Annie, with a little surge of gladness. "Why dont wet" It was good not to be left entirely out of things. (To be continued.)

Larger Work Of Conference Is Beginning, Says Wilson LONDON, June 30. A peace message from President Wilson to the Daily Mail and the Weekly Dispatch la printed this morning in the latter publication. It follows: "Many things crowd into the mind to be said about the peace treaty, but the thought that stands out in front of all others 13 that by the terms of the treaty the greatest possible measure of compensation has been provided for people whose homes and lives were wrecked by the storm of war, and security has been given them that the storm shall not arise again. "Insofar as we came together to inture these things, the work of the conference Is finished, but In a larger sense Its work begins today. In answer to an unmistakable appeal, the league of nations has been constituted and a covenant has been drawn which shows the way to international understanding and peace. "We stand at the cross roads, however, and the way is only pointed out. Those who saw through the travail of war the vision of a. world made secure for mankind must now consecrate their lives to its realization." i

America Pledges To Give Assistance To France PARIS, June 30. The Franco-American agreement Has been signed . on behalf of the two governments, according to newspapers. It is said that the covenant included several articles and specifies that violations of the peace treaty by Germany will give France the right to request American and British assistance. The Journal says that the coincidence in the signing of the convention and the peace treaty on the same day is part of the spirit of union among the assotiated states to see that the treaty is carried out. Paris newspapers generally urge the French nation to begin at once the work of economic reconstruction.

Ft. Wayne Man Gains 15 Pounds Taking Tanlac Sanf ord Rail Was Relieved of Rheumatism and Other Troubles by Tanlac. Hundreds of Fort Wayne people are now taking Tanlac and are testifying to the benefits they have derived from its use. Sanford S. Rail, pumping engineer for the Nickel Plate railroad, living at 704 Frederick street. Fort Wayne, made the following statement a few days ago: "I had not been taking Tanlac aulte
a month until my troubles were gone
ana i naa picked up fifteen pounds in weight. For a year or more I had been suffering from rheumatism and stomach trouble and it looked like I was simply going to get rijcht down
and out. My back was stiff and painful all the time. The pains would
snoot across my kidneys, then up between my shoulders, and at night, especially, I could hardly get any rest on account of it. I would twist and squirm nearly all night trying to tret
easy and felt so tired and stiff in ; the mornings it was an effort for me to get out of bed. Why. it used to take a couple of hours every morning to get limbered up so I could get around to do any good and my back hurt me so bad many a time that I could hardly stay on my feet and do my work. "But, It's a fact, before I had finished my first bottle of Tanlac I could feel the rheumatism easing up. I got Tanlac on account of what others, with similar troubles, said it had done for them, and I am mighty glad I tried it, for it has not only gotten me over the rheumatism, but it has put my stomach in good shape. I was Just miserable after meals with the gas on my stomach. I would swell up like a balloon, so to speak, and have awful feelings about my heart. I also had a heavy feeling, like lead, in the pit of my stomach and hurt me so that I could hardly stand my clothes. "But I don't ever have any of these troubles now at all, and haven't since Tanlac fixed me up, and I can eat just anything. I can recommend Tanlac to anyone with stomach trouble and rheumatism, for It certainly does the work." , The stomach regulates the condition of the blood and is the fountain head
1 of health or disease as the case may
be. Tanlac Is intended primarily for the regulation of the stomach and the correction of catarrhal inflammation, but it Is no uncommon thing for people who have used it to find that it has relieved them, not only of indigestion, but also of rheumatism, kidney complaints and many other ailments not generally recognized as having . their origin in stomach trouble.
