RISING IN FACE OF NEW HARVEST

Signing of Peace Pact Only Stiffens Price Cattle Reach Top of Market. By WILLIAM R. SANBORN The record price on hogs at Chicago stands at $21.60 and on Saturday fiereral loads were bought at $21.55, on which day the "average" price on all offerings was $21.13; a pretty neat figure if you have hogs to sell. Some of us, however, are not so fortunate. Not having hogs to sell we nevertheless have bacon and ham to buy, and there's the rub, also the pinch. The higher the cost to the market man, the larger the profit usually tacked on per pound. In June 1915. eleven months after the war opened In Europe, the aver

age price of hogs for the closing week

of the month was $7.60 at Chicago, or a shade more than one-third of the

present price. It is now freely pre

dicted that hogs will sell In Chicago at $22 or better, early this week.

Receipts of hogs at Chicago last

week were 160.200, which was 40,400

head more than were yarded the same week In 1918, when the average price was but $16.55 per 100 pounds. In view of this difference in the cost of hogs let us contemplate mess pork,

ribs and lard.. Mess pork closed at $51.60 per 200-1 b. barrel. on Saturday, against $42.80 a year ago. Short ribs eold at $27.85 on Saturday, against $23.40. and lard at $34.10 against $25.50 a 100 pounds, as compared with one year ago on ' same date. Shipments of lard out of Chicago during the past two weeks, and principally for export, totalled 25,000.000 -pounds, compared with less than 5,000,000 pounds a year ago. Total Live Stock Receipts. The combined total - receipts of cattle, hogs and sheep at the seven principal western markets from January 1 to -June 28, were: Cattle. 4,782.000; hogs, 14.720.000; sheep, 4,-

138,000. It will be observed that the receipts of sheep were but 250,000 less than those of cattle. The seven markets receiving this tremendous supply were: Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, SL Louis, St Joseph, St Paul and Stoux City. The average price of good beef cattle at Chicago during the past week was $13.65, which was 15 cents higher than for the preceding week. Cows and heifers averaged $10.20, and veal calves $17.75, which was 50 cents higher on calves than for the previous week. As against the advance on calves a decline of $2 per hundred was noted on lambs, the average being $12.25 for the week. Stocker and feeder cattle sold at an average of $10.90, or 15 cents better than the week before. The present week will be broken into by the holidays, for the yards will close on the Fourth and Saturf day Is never much of a market day at any of the yards. Hog Bought by Packers. The packers' at Chicago have purchased hogs as follows since January 1. to date: Armour & Company 746,800; Swift & Company 584,000; Morris & Company 346,500 ; Wilson and Company, 420,500; The Hammond company 334.000; -Anglo-American company 211.500; Boyd-Lunham. 239,400; Western Packing company. 261.600; Roberts & Oake. 160.000; Miller & Hart, 115,700; Independent Packing company. 185.000. The reader will observe that the

Big Five are not the only meat packers . in Chicago, by any means, and the above list of purchases by other packing interests shows competition in the buying of all live stock, as all the others also kill cattle and sheep. All the live stock markets of the country reflect Chicago fluctuations in price, pretty closely, and all : of them reached the top of the season's figures last week, in sympathy with that central market Corn Growing Fast Corn and live stock are so closely allied that it is of interest to note the action of the corn market during the last week. Reports from all corn belt districts state that there has been three weeks of the best continuous weather for corn that has ever been experienced, and that the crop on the whole has made wonderful progress. This is very cheering to us all, and especially to the bears on corn in the Chicago pit Nevertheless corn has steadily . advanced In price and the glucose and breakfast food interests are paying the highest prices in months for desirable grades. The signing of the peace pact had no effect upon grain, except to stiffen prices instead of lowering them. Flour Advanced 40 Cents. It Is of Interest to note that flour was advanced 40 cents per barrel for patents at . Minneapolis last week. This action, right at the beginning of harvest comes as somewhat of a sur

prise. There is no scarcity of old

wheat and we are going to be pressed to find cars and storage for the new crop. Perhaps we have closed the of

fices of the food administration too soon, for there should certainly be

some parity - between the price paid for wheat and the cost of flour, even of proprietary and advertised brands. It is only fair to state that this has been the rule, in all the history of the trade, but in these times of climbing prices it would be just as well to be able to apply the brakes as to excessive flour protts.

U. S. SOLDIERS IN RIOTING AT BREST

BREST, June 30. Two French civilians were killed and five- American soldiers and sailors were injured severely and more than 100 wounded in riots here last night Two of the American soldiers are expected to die.

Triple Alliance Pact To Be Published Soon PARIS, June 30. The first public announcement of the text of the defensive pact between France, Great Britain and the United States will be made in the Chamber of Deputies, the Echo de Paris Bays. The document according to the newspaper, contains clauses intended to justify it before British and American public opinion.

Christian Service For Boy Heroes Of War Held In Pagan Ampitheater

ROME, June 30. On the very site where once Christians were offered as the prey of wild beasts to amuse the Roman populace in the Roman coliseum, where Ceasars sacrificed the faithful to satisfy the pagan lust a Christian service has at last been held. It was celebrated recently in memory of the Boy Scouts of the Italian army who had done , messenger service at the front and were killed In action. . : The altar used for the service was one which had been carried by the Italian armies through many campaigns in the Alps and was placed in the west end of the Coliseum. The service was presided over by Monsignor Bartolomasl, who held the rank of general in the Italian army, being the chief chaplain to the Italian forces. The Immense ruin of pagan days was filled with people. Detachments of Boy Scouts occupied the central part of the building, a place In pagan days used for the arena. The Bcouts were decked in their uniforms and carried rifles instead of the sword and spear of the ancient Roman gladiator. After the mass. Monslgnor Bartolomasl delivered a stirring sermon in which he drew attention to the change in human thought which was able to convert this pagan ampitheatre into a Christian temple.
