Once again Geraldine Farrar acquits herself magnificently in a Goldwyn picture. Her fourth Goldwyn appearance is made in "The Stronger Vow," which comes to the Washington theatre, beginning Wednesday. Geraldine Farrar is Dolores de Cordova, one of the last of a Spanish family that is at war with the house of Estudillo. She is seen among the gay revelers at an Easter carnival in Lerida, chatting with a handsome stranger, to the annoyance of Pedro Toral, who seeks her hand in marriage. Enraged by the smiles she bestows upon the stranger, Toral orders her brother, Jose, to take her away. Jose resents the other's interference and the pair come to blows. That night Jose is stabbed to death and Toral is the first to find the body.
I - Suspecting that the stranger is an' Estudillo, Toral schemes to have him accused of the murder. So convincing is Toral's tale that Dolores takes the blood vow to avenge the killing. Her search for the slayer leads to Paris, where she weds the Marquis de Valera. After the ceremony Toral shocks her with the news that she has mar ried her brother's murderer. Do-! lores' refusal to carry out the blood vow results in her capture by a band of Apaches. How she frees herself from the outlaws furnishes a thrilling climax in which Toral is revealed as the murderer. ' MURRAY It all started at the Purple Gondola restaurant where Artnur MCArney naa gone at the invitation of his friend, Bick Oiseu. Both boys were clerks, and at the restaurant they met Elsaj Owenaon, a pretty, pert stenographer, i At the meeting McArney fell in love with her, but as his salary was small he had to prod himself along to think ; rif u-nva rf fot tin 1' fn nil p h mnnPV to- t gether to take the extravagant Elsa out to dinners and dances. The effect this has on him is to stimulate his ambition and make him forge ahead in his work, while as for -fciisa, the moment that McArney asks her to marrv him all her extravagance disappears as if by magic, for the man she is going to marry must save money. This story makes a delightful screen vehicle for Bryant Washburn in "The Way of a Man With a Maid," his second Paramount picture, which will be shown at the Murray theatre next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and Wanda Hawley gives a charming impersonation of the little stenographer. Jay Dwlggins, Billy Elmer, James Neill, also are in the cast. You know them all if you're a film fan, for their work is famous in Paramount and Artcraft pictures, as three of the cleverest character actors before the public. Billy Elmer has done excellent work in Paramount pictures starring Vivan Martin. Charles Ray and Enid Bennett. In "The Way of a Man With a Maid," Elmer appears as a hard boiled taxi driver, Dwiggins is a stodgy little broker, who is in love with a pretty young girl and James Neill is an irate father. A wonderful combination of character talent. . MURRETTE "The Girl Who Stayed at Home" which is to show at the Murrette theatre Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, tells the story of the family of a Confederate soldier, who left his home after the Civil war and went to live in France. There his daughter, Madamoiselle Blossom is born and reared. into this ouaint. old-fashioned at mosphere comes a party of New York-; ers. Mr. Grey is an old friend of the Confederate soldier. With him is his son Ralph and a daughter. They are swept oft their feet by the charm of the French girl, and when they return Blossom goes with them for a visit. jt In New York she meets another son Jim Grey, who is attached to a cabaret tinger, Cutie Beautiful. When the war breaks out, Ralph steals away and enlists, and later Jim gets disgusted with his shipyard job ' and enters the army. The effect on careless, happy-go-lucky Cutie Beautiful makes her a changed girl. Jim becomes a hero and when he goes back from the war finds a regenerated and faithful Cutie waiting for him. The story of the Lost Battalion is told in the picture in dramatic fashion. Among the most interesting players in the cast of "The Unpardonable Sin," to be shown at the Murrette theatre, are a group of particularly ,iomr children, including Masters Wesley Barry and Bobbie Connolly. Bobbie Connolly, who is widely known among motion picture devotees, appears as a Belgium Boy Scout. Master Barry and two other youngsters are refugees, the first-named a typical young American who has been caught in the European maelstrom and is fighting his way out, and the others a couple of Belgian orphans whom Master Barry has taken under his protecting wing. The children have most of the comedy interest in the big picture and also add much to the dra matic strength. mRuisEscoTs; I pv Cleanse thoroughly J jj reduce inflammation aes apply ugnuy, wiwout f
