ities are somewhat disturbed over what looks like an organizer effort to
start a socialist movement jof an extreme nature in this country; - Several
secret meetings have been? held at which speakers have proclaimed rad
ical doctrine, clothing their Remarks in menacing, though veiled Unguage. A number of agitators are reported to
have circulated in the crowda at the industrial city of Osaka during a re
cent celebration of the attainment of
majority or tne crown prince.
BUY LIBERTY BONDS INSTEAD OF : "WILDCAT S TOOK" URGE BANKERS
Warning against " investments In j "wildcat" oil wells, rubber companies, and other ways to sudden wealth, which are now being promoted throughout the country, .was sounded Thursday by local bankers who urge small investors to put their money into safe securities. The Liberty bonds of the United States government are by far the better and safer Investments for small holders than the get-rich-quick schemes being promoted by oil companies, declared a banker. "We have numerous requests for advice from local persons concerning the Investment in these stocks, but the; best advice we can give Is for the investor to put his money In the United States bonds. , - -" ; Axhese bonds bear interest at the rate of four and three-fourths per cent, and are exempt from taxation in small amounts, whereas the best paying legitimate oil stock usually brings no more than seven or eight per cent, which is not equal to the government offer, after taxes are paid. Other stock pays higher but is dangerous. The initial investment too. is far safer with the government bonds, which are without question the best securities on the market. . "Investors should look more to their principal than to the amount of dividends paid by the investment, and often, where this part Is overlooked, the principal as well as any chance for profit is lost" Oil Wells Risky. The workings of some of the large get-rich-quick oil companies of the south, are explained in a recent story which appeared in southern newspapers, parts of which follow: In Texas there is going on today the biggest gamble in oil lands and leases ever known in the history of the industry. It is the excitement of the Klondike, Goldfield and Tombstone rolled Into one big revelry of get-rich-qulck schemes, with crude petroleum as the basis for the various operations
of the promoters and speculators. Then there is the conservative, legitimate and solid oil operators who vsually follow in the wake of the original prospectors and place the industry on a substantial basis. All these elements are now Intermingling in Texas. It is shown by statistics that have Just been collected that there are approximately 800 wildcat oil wells now being drilled in Texas. It is estimated that the cost of putting down a deep test well, say to a depth of 3,000 feet, is approximately $20,000. Figured on this oasis, there is being expended at this time in prospecting for oil outside of the areas that have already been proved about $16,000,000. This sum does not by any means represent the total wastage as it might be termed, in this industry but it only represents what is expended during an average
period, say of every two months, or
at the rate of $96,000,000 a; year. Promoters Take Chances
To many promoters, . there is no greater sport than taking long chances
in their investments, meager as their available capital may be. Compara
tively few of them are interested in
the producing, end of the game. They limit their activities, to acquiring leases of land as cheaply as possible and boosting the -price to the-point where
they can dispose of their holdings with good profits. As the drilling proceeds, however, the promoters, manage in aquiet way to have the report circulated that splendid oil indications have been encountered. , This causes both a boost
ing of the price of the stock of the company and the land lease values. When the stock has reached the proper notch it is "Unloaded, upon the susceptible public. Alluring offers are made to Investors, telling of the splendors of a career in oil, and how easy it is to make a fortune. Then the crash may come.

Kilties Present Stirring . Program At Murray Theatre A bit of Scotland 'was brought to the Murray theatre yesterday by the "Kilties" band. The bright Highland costumes . of the musicians, the wild mueic of the bagpipes and the old Scotch airs that everybody knows helped create the Illusion of the heather country. There are 24 musicians at present in the Kilties band, .which originates in Belleville, Canada. There
used to be 50, Murdoch McDonald, the director says, but most of them went to war, and a great many of the bestknown musicians have not yet returned. Of the present personnel, the majority have seen service In the recent war, either in the Canadian or American forces. McDonald, himself, was both in the Canadian army and the United States navy. One of the first numbers which the band plays is
Battery C march, which the director composed and dedicated to the unit in which his younger brother is enlisted. ' The program which the band gives is well balanced. There are some martial airs, and a group of old Scotch songs, some rag-time and popular songs, a few classical selections, a descriptive number of an English fox hunt, and a Jazz finale which "brings down the house." The most difficult number which the band presents is the suite from "Atlantis," given with feeling and careful Interpretation.
Feature numbers are given by "Wee
Jamie" Clark of Dundee, Scotland,
who Dlavs the baeolnea and dances
the Highland Fling,' and Miss Jean!
English, of Belleville, Canada, a talented and pretty young soprano. The Kilties band was organized almost twenty years ago, and the present director has been with the organization for the last nine years. In 1904 the band toured the world, playing before King Edward of England and other royal personages. The band will appear at the Murray today, Saturday and Sunday, with a complete change of program tomorrow. .
Mark Johanning is sailing from New York, this week on a cruise to Galveston, and then to Liverpool. Johanning is in the United States navy. Harry Merhorn has returned to the Great Lakes Training Station following a furlough spent here. First Class Sergeant John B. Staubach, a member of the Second Balloon Company which was the first United States Air Service unit to see active service in France, has arrived in New York City according to advice received by his father, George Staubach, police sergeant. He saw eighteen months of
overseas service.
The air of an ordinary room is filled with tiny particles of matter which fall on an airy soap bubble, alter the surface tension, and poof it is gone.
MURRETTE There are "big scenes" without number In "The Unpardonable Sin," which is to be shown at the Murrette theatre July "2, 3, 4, 6, but "biggest" in point of interest and suspense though, paradoxically, "smallest"" in point of characters involved, is . the disrobing : scene, which has been attracting the attention of the public wherever the tremendous photoplay feature has been exhibited. In the development of the story, Blanche - Sweet, appearing as Dimny Parcot, an aggressive American girl, in company with' Matt Moore as Noll WInsor. an American "working with the food commission in Belgium, finds herself entering the military lines and forced to submit to the most careful search of her person for possible hidden documents. Methods used - in making these military searches have received sufficient publicity to make the average man familiar with them, and it Is pretty generally known that but little respect was paid to the feelings of modesty, which were .natural on the part ot women who fell into the toils of those ordered to make the 'searches.
In "The Unpardonable Sin," Miss Sweet Is. shown alone in a room with one of the most repulsive characters that has ever been represented on the screen.. Article bjr article, down to the last filmy garment, her clothes are removed, despite her protests and despite - her desperate struggles. The scene has been photographed through a. diaphragm of silk, and the two characters appear in silhouette. -It is remarkable,- too, that, so realistically has the situation been worked out that there is not even the slightest suggestion that this truly sensational bit has been "dragged in by . the heels" to pander to tastes which are. low or depraved.
