TRAP, GUN AND ROD

BY TOM MARSHALL. Fish ing brings to the surface the best or worst traits in mankind! Few "grouches" are found In the piscatorial arena as . contestants. Talk with a Waltonian disciple, the hall, mark of happy mentality is Indelibly stamped upon his features. The well spring of good fellowship encased in his system, bubbles to the surface. The schools of fishing have thre.e classes from which they grind out graduates. The high schools furnish honors to the "get . the meat fisherman," the academic, grant diplomas to light tackle or fly casting anglers, the post-graduate, the finished product, artistic dry fly exponents, who travel great distances around the bush, eventually acquiring results, which plug, ' angle worm, spoon, buck tail, fly or minnow, would have accomplish ed In less time. . Oh, you satisfaction! Anglers and fishermen when astream are akin, liv ing in a land of enchantment, to be awakened, usually by brush entangle ments. Every cast made Is freighted i with thrills of suppressed excitement and anticipation. They are pitting ingenuity against incongruity. Accuracy, practice, with ability to read the waters corectly, make the dry fly ex pert. A floating fly will arouse a trout to fighting action. With my old friend Fred Bills, I was fishing in northern Wisconsin. There I essayed an effort with dry fly. The stream furnished just enough current to speed a fly to trout notice. Having correctly read the wafers, a nice large battling spotted tiger trout, was men tally located near a rock which had gathered some" floating debris, making a -most seductive loafing place for a speckled beauty. Here was a chance for "chip-floating," which I was anx ious to. try out. When my floater arrived at a logical point near the rock, the fly was gently whisked from chip to water, a whirl pool swish, a snappy strike, a Sulli van rush greeted my effort. The hook was set before the trout could unmouth the fly. He rushed, lineal objections wre interposed This scaled ichthyic dynamo resorted to every re sourceful tactic known to mid-stream politicians. Breaking water, he would leap into mid air, scattering with his vibrating tail showers of "first water diamonds In every direction. At the end of an aggressive battle he succumbed.
