BRINGING UP

- WASHINGTON , Beautiful girls. clever comedians, cats, doga, et cetera, are the principal features of "When Love 13 Blind," the new Paramount-Mack Sennett comedy which is scheduled to be shown at the Washington theatre last times today. This is an uproarious farce that is guaranteed to drive away the blues of the most Jaundiced spectator. Ben Turpin and Charles Lynn are the principal fun-makers. They are old pals who become rivals in love and later develop into detectives who risk life and limb in their efforts to catch a notorious crook only to learn they have been chasing the wrong man. , Marie Prevost and Phyllis Haver portray the leading feminine roles. With the aid of the Sennett beauty girls, Teddy, the Great Dane, Pep, the studio cat and other animals, the characters in the comedy put across numerous screamingly funny incidents, all of which contribute to make this one of the most enjoyable comedies turned out by the Paramount-Sennett forces in a long while. It must be seen to be appreciated. The croquet game alone is worth the price of admission. C Madge Kennedy surrounded hy cowpuhchers and plainsmen, not to mention hold-up men and horses, prairie dogs and hooting owls, will be a novelty when the. piquant comedienne plays at the Washington ' theatre last times today in her latest Goldwyn picture, "Leave It to Susan." She enlists the support not only of half a dozen well known screen players but as . many genuine cowboys. One of these in particular Miss Kennedy never tired of listening to. He is Walter Cameron, the youngest chief deputy marshal that has ever been in the employ of the United States government. Although well past 30 years he has been "in at the death" of more train robbers than the majority of men in the service of Uncle Sam. ' He was reared In the service of the government. His father was superintendent of the Chickasaw nation, Indian Territory, when Walter first saw the light of day. and afterwards he was made one of the official sons of the Ojibwa nation by adoption. His most courageous and exciting experience was in connection with the round-up of the Cook gang in 1895, when Ed and Bill Cook and half a dozen border ruffians held up the express on the Choctaw railroad between Hartshorne and Fort Smith, Ark. Another Landmark Of Washington Discarded (By Associated Press) PHILADELPHIA. June 18. Another landmark of George Washington is to go into the discard. The historic Washington House, noted" as a hotel since 1746, is to be torn down as soon as prohibition be-1 comes effective, it is announced. In its place will be erected a modern hotel, office building and theatre. The place is filled with reminiscences of Washington and revolutionary times. Washington retreated to it after the disaster of Brandywine. A bronze tablet reads: "In this room September 11, 1777, Washington wrote the only report of the battle of Brandywine." . Previously Washington had been a guest in this hostelry then known as the Washington Arms and again, when making the Journey from Washington to New York when he was elected president, he with his retinue had breakfast in the hotel's dining room. To commemorate this event the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a tablet reading: "This marks this house as the place where Washington wrote at midnight the only report of the battle of Brandywine. MARRIAGE, LARCENY, EVICTION, MAKE BUSY LIFE FOR JUSTICE OF PEACE

The life of a justice of the peace is a nerve racking one, say W. B. Marsh and S. K. Morgan, who hold that office in Richmond. Between marrying people, getting divorces for them, putting them out of houses because they don't pay the rent, rendering the best judgment in petty larceny cases, performing the general duties of a magistrate and practising law, they say they hardly have time to shave. The Justice court is the place to get the marriage knot tied so it cannot be untied, in the opinion of Marsh. He says that he has performed the marriage ceremony so many times that the total is appalling, and be claims that . no person involved in such a ceremony in his court has ever asked for a separation. However, he says this does not mean that he has never helped untie a knot. Morgan is of the opinion that the justice of the peace has more jurisdiction than the ' circuit - or supreme court judge in that when handing down a decision the justice can exercise more judgment. Cases in the justice court are small cases that are not important enough for the city or circuit court, or that must come into this court before any other merely as preliminary pro ceedings. Recently a boy was arrested at Boston for stealing property from a freight train. He was arraigned before a justice of the peace. But the case will come into circuit court because he is charged with breaking in tne cars, a penitentiary offense. No case can be brought in the justice of the peace court if it involves more than $200; ; Questions may arise that have never been considered before, say Mr. Morgan and Mr. Marsh. Especially in cases involving rentals, leases, etc. In considering these they nearly have to make new law all the time. The justices must have co-operation and usually get it, as shown in a recent experience in Morgan's court. He had some difficulty in getting a man into court. Knowing a young woman living in the neighborhood of the man, he swore her in as a deputy constable and in two days she appeared with the witness. Morgan recently married the manager and leading man of a show at the Murray and one of the chorus girls. The came into his office one afternoon, with the entire company. He said they were a "noisy bunch." Marriages are the "cream" of the income of a justice, so they say, and the more they have, the better. The life is not always nerve racking for occasionally something really amusing happens. Recently a young couple appealed to Morgan, late in the afternoon. Justice Morgan said he "smelled a runaway." They obtained their license from the county clerk, and Morgan and the clerk sent the couple to the hotel after they were married while they went to put the seal on the papers. Before the newly-weds had time to Miss Olive EUason Wins Cap In Golf Tournament Word was received here today that Miss Olive Eliason, who with her mo ther is now living in Los Angeles, Cal., has won another cup in a golf tournament. Miss Eliason during the last year has been playing at the different golf courses in and near Los Angeles, making an enviable record. The tour nament last week was held at the Long Beach course. Miss Eliason was one of the best women golfers at the Richmond Country club course before she left here. She is a sister of Mrs. Paul Price. get to the hotel, the justice of the peace and the clerk called the hotel and explained the situation, and to have a little fun, the young couple should be compelled to sit in the lobby until they could show papers proving that they were married. When the clerk and justice of the peace arrived with the papers the couple were waiting in the middle of the lobby, the situation being keenly enjoyed by onlookers. When the groom saw them

he indignantly remarked, "There come those fools!" There are no cases other than ejection cases now scheduled for the jus tice of the peace courts. Lindsey to go to Jail

Rather than Pay Fine for Contempt of Court DENVER, Col., June 18. Ben B. Lindsey, Judge of "uenver's juvenile court, will go to jail before he will pay a fine of $500 for contempt of the criminal court here, he has announced. The Colorado supreme court, on June 2, denied Judge Lindsey's petition for a rehearing. The judge had fifteen days to pay or go to jail, is the court insisted. The fine was assessed when Judge Lindsey, in May, 1915, declined to tell , what Neall Wright, 14 year old ward of the juvenile court, had told the judge about the shooting of Nealfs father. Neal's mother was tried on charge of murder. Neal was the only eye-witness. Mrs. Wright was acquitted. Judge Lindsey refused to testify at the tirial, insisting that whatever in formation he possessed regarding the killing had been given him by the boy in confidence, and he could not and would not violate the boy'a confidence. Soon after, the trial, John A Perry, then judge of the criminal court, found his fellow judge guilty of contempt, and assessed the $500. Judge Lindsey fine was upheld by a majority of the appealed to the supreme court. The Justices three of them, however, dissenting. On June 2, last, the Colorado Supreme Court denied Judge Lindsey a rehearing. Judge Lindsey announced that in refusing to pay his fine he is not acting upon a personal point, but considers that : as the Denver juvenile court is one of the oldest in the United States, all other courts look to it to uphold its rights. And one of these is that a relation of circumstances given In confidence to a juvenile court judge is not to be used in any other proceedings. Porto Rican Cigars Are Out Of American Markets

(By Associated Press) SAN JUAN, June 18 Porto Rican cigars are ractically out of the United cigars are practically out of the United of cigar makers and tobacco workers which has been on since the first of January. Approximately 15,000 employ- j es are idle and all surplus stocks of j cigars in the United States are reported to have ben exhausted. The making of cigars is the largest manufacturing industry in Porto Rico and the continued idleness of the cigar makers here is causing much hardship among them. Last year one company alone manufactured 75,000,000 cigars for the American market. This company, the largest in the field, has been idle since the 6trike started. Not all of the cigar makers here are members of the union, but many of them are, and the cigar makers unions in the United States through their international organization are paying strike benefits to the union strikera here. Although there has ben no work now for five months, the strikers say they are prepared to remain idle until next year, if necesary in order to gain their demands of increased, wages. Another demand is that all of the cigar makers be re-employed. On this point the Porto Rican-American tobacco company has stated that it would give employment to all operatives capable of making cigars for which the company now has a demand.
