MURRAY VAUDEVILLE
UHHHMKCaHMBBail MURRAY One of the rarest things In the world an original idea, is expressed In "Good-bye, Bill!" the second John Emerson - Anita Loos production for Paramount, starring those two sterling artists. Shirley Mason and Ernest Truex. which is shown at the Murray theatre today. The photoplay satirizes
Will Bill Hohenzollern from sfart to
finish. It -shows how he hung his ter
rorism Idea on the eye of the German people so effectually that he thought 6ure it would work on the rest of the world too. Well, Bill didn't succeed In scaring
the rest of the world, as we all know, and he surely didn't scare the authors
of this new kind of Kaiser play. They j are undoubtedly the best girl act seen
A rotund comedian who Is almost the exact counterpart of "Fatty" Arbuckle, and who is just as funny on the stage as Arbuckle is on the screen; two blackface comedians who sang parodies until they had to beg to go to their dressing rooms; and a young man with a violin and a young girl's performance upon the Italian harp, were the big hits of what is without a doubt the best vaudeville bill local fans have witnessed in years at the Murray. Madame Rialto offered a series of poses which are very well done. As scene after scene unfolded during the progress of the four acts, it became apparent that despite the warm spell the management had not curtailed their booking, but had augmented the bill until It seemed like a veritable big-time Keith show was
being presented. The Bridal Belles
have fun with the Kaiser, the Crown Prince and the whole Prussian gang and they do it effectively. As a rule
the grimmer the Job the American has to do. the more he kids himself about It. Over on the other side our boys Tiave laughed and joked in the face of death, as they fought for the freedom of the world, and this play brings some of their healthy kidding to the folks at home. - The Kaiser hung hardware on the breasts of all his gang. He himself wore so many medals it looked as though he had the medal measles. Swords clanked and the points of the mustaches of the Prussians stuck up - toward the stars. It looked to them as though they couldn't lose. WASHINGTON J T'Soclety's Answer," appearing at the Washington Theatre June 16 and 17, has cansad a ripple of interest throughout the country wherever It has bean shown. In Richmond it will come with particular interest as both Lou Emmons, formerly well known Richmond tailor, and Frederick Cc tea. son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cates of North Eleventh street ere playing in it
The story deals with a frivolous set i at a well known Florida resort, who J are won over to the need and demar df of a country at war. Romance,, love and'a portion of labor action re-1 sult'.ag in a contemplated strike add j force to the production. Mr. Emmons j
as trie manure during magnate, is his-j iV.thpr of the heroine. Frederick Cates tekes the role of his son. Both son a-,.(i d?.uchter succumb to the love god di'rig the course of the play. The picture was photographed at Palm Beach and a majority of the actors were guests in the hotels of the resort at the time it was made. The first screening was at a charity ball in Palm Beach. Each guest at this presentation paid the price of $1 to see the picture.
WASHINGTON Pauline Frederick's second Goldwyn Picture is "One Week of Life," to be seen at the Washington Theatre beginning today. Again Samuel Goldwyn keeps his promise made to the exhibitors of America when Pauline Frederick be
came the newest star in his constellation by presenting her in what is distinctly an emotional drama of modern ;ilfe. Not only is the star provided iwith a splendid story, which gives her ithe opportunity to dominate one powerful situation after another, but she ,is enabled to appear In a succession of costumes more gorgeous than she has ever worn on the screen. AS If that were not enough for the jpublic, the scenario is cleverly arrang'ed to present her in two distinct roles. By itself each would be a brilliant one, together they afford Miss Frederick . sweeping scope for her emotions. Yet the interest of the play does not depend on any trick of double exposure. Each heroine lives apart They do not even meet. Written by Cosmo Hamilton, famous playwright and novelist, arranged
lor the screen by Willard Mack, di
rected by Hobart Henley, and with a
cast including the leading man who aided Mis3 Frederick to achieve fame in "The Eternal City" Thomas Holding, together with Sydney Ainsworth and Corinne Barker, Goldwyn offers "One Week of Life" with pride.
here this season. The girls are comely, the scenery and wardrobe elabor
ate, while the comedy work of Billy
House, the comedian, is a hit of Ar
bucklean proportions. Cortese and
Murray with their Instruments were recalled, while Jennings and Mack,
men comedians, convulsed the audience. Shirley Mason is seen upon the screen in "Good-Bye. Bill", which is an enjoyable feature. This bill plays the last half, and will doubtless break all attendance records, as It is the most pretentious as well as the best laughing show seen this season. r Roscoe Series, Auto Race
Driver, Visiting Here Roscoe Sarles, who drove the Oldfield Special in the recent 600-mile re.ee at Indianapolis, is In Richmond for a several days' visit. Sarles is enroute to Kalamazoo, Mich., where he will rebuild the Roamer car which burned at Indianapolis, causing the death of LeCoq and his mechanician, Bandini.
The Roamer special is to be rebuilt for the Elgin road race in August According to Sarles. little is left of the car but the motor, which is almost a wreck. Sarles drove this car on the Pacific during the last year taking first place several times. He was accompanied here by Maurice Donnelly of Indianapolis, Roamer manager. Sarles will probably drive the Oldfield Special at the Fourth of July races at Sheepshead Bay, X. Y.
Bay Strawberries For Canning Now, Is Advice
Strawberries will not last much longer, according to reports, as the berries are ripening fast now and within the next few weeks will commence to rot if there is much rainfall. By next week the berries will be down to about 15 cents a quart and people wishing to can strawberries this year are urged to do so some time In the next two weeks. The first cantaloupes have appeared on the market and prices are exceedingly low for both cantaloupes and watermelons which have been on the
market for some time. A 75 cent drop was announced Friday in watermelons which are now retailing at $1.25. According to local dealers, watermelons should be retailing at about 75 cents next week.
When you get around to the fact that the prices of necessaries are so high because you are willing to pay the prices that are asked, you'll be on the right track to lower them.
ROGAP ELIMINATED AS FIGHT REFEREE
PHILADELPHIA. Pa., June 13. William J. Rocap has eliminated himself from consideration as referee for the Willard-Dempsey fight In a letter yesterday to Major A. J. mSW Wallace mgw Kei m
His Latest and Best Release This production is an adaptation for. the screen from one of the short stories of O. Henry, and that fact alone assures an interesting plot. Wallace Reid plays the lead supported by a practically all-star cast and a most delightful photoplay is the result. Just a story of a boy and girl affair that rings so true, and is so full of lifelike realism; that abounds in comedy situations that just tie you up, and pathos and suspense that grip you; it is one of the best illustrations of Wallace Reid's fascinating personality that has yet been screened.
