PENNSY PLAYERS IN FIRST PLACE IN OFFICE LEAGUE

The Pennsy placed itself in the lead

in the Commercial league -when it defeated the Item baseball team 8 to 3, Monday evening at the Exhibition

park. The Item failed to produce a pitcher that could hold the Railroaders and after scoring eight runs in the flrBt two innings the Pennsy team slowed up. Nick Castelucclo, catching for the Item, after getting a base on balls, stole two bases on Bill Winters, the Pennsy catcher and scored the first run, Joe Brandil following with the second 6core. The Item's last score was made in the fourth inning when Runnells. and added slaver, slammed

out a homerun. After the first inning in which the roundhouse team made two runs Joe Brandil pitching for the Item became discouraged and vacated the mound in favor of Lee. Before Lee could retire the side the Pennsy team batted entirely around. In the next two Innings Lee pitched better ball and held tho Railroaders scoreless. The Pennsy team used three pitchers. Centerville Team Is v Preparing For Cleanup CENTERVILLE, Ind., June 10. The newly organized baseball team under the managership of Carl Jones is planning a campaign against out-of-

town teams this summer. Although the local team suffered defeat at the hands of the Richmond All Stars, Sunday, an attempt will be

made to retrieve that defeat on July 4, when the All-Stars again play here. Doherty the Centerville twirler proved himself in good shape, but the lack of batting practice on the part of the locals chiefly contributed the defeat.

S.A.L. Managers Meet Tonight To Plan Banquet The Saturday Afternoon league managers will hold a confab at the sporting goods store of President Sam Vigran Tuesday night to discuss the prospects of the league this season. One of the subjects that probably will be brought up will be preliminary plans for a big banquet for all members of the league at the close of the season. During the re-organization of the league early this spring it was suggester that a banquet be laid for all players in the S. A. L., if they aided in making this season's battles a success. ' -

It seems that the heavyweight crown has always favored the pugs who used a "J" as the initial of their fighting name. Here Is the list of the past champs: J. Kllrane. J. Sullivan. J. Corbett. B. Jack Kearns, manager of Dempsey, declined to take advantage of the Sunday throng and charged the customary 25 cents to see the challenger work out There were 1,600 paid admissions at the Dempsey camp. Kearns Is distributing a part of the money received for watching Dempsey train, to churches and charitable organizations in the Bay shore district. He presented the pastor one church with a check for $100 to defray the expenses of a church entertainment and in appreciation for the donation

a Sunday school teacher visited the camp with a number of his class to convey their thanks. Reports that Bill Brown, a New York referee, had been selected to referee the Independnce day contest, were denied today. It was announced that the referee question would not be definitely settled until probably two weeks before the contest and that the boxers themselves would attempt to agree upon the selection of the third man in th ring. If the boxers fail to agree upon a referee, Tex Rickard promoter of the contest under the terms of the articles of agreement will be empowered to name one. It is known that he favored Borwn,

Willard said that he had not given the question of a referee a serious thought. "My championship is at 6take and I, of course, will hold out for the man I consider the most competent," Willard said. "I do not care to say whom I favor. I undoubtedly will meet Kearns and Rickard within two weeks and will attempt to agree on a man at that time. I do not care to say if Brown will be acceptable."

Palladium And Pennsy Teams

Hold Equal League Standing Present indication are that the Pennsy will have an easy- time winning the Commercial league pennant unless the three other teams in the league can hold them down in the aviating stunts in the next few game. At present the Palladium and Pennsy have both a total of 1000 per cent in league standing and if the Palladium wins the game Wednesday night from Himes Dairy team, will be tied with the Railroaders for first place. The rubber will then be played off the following week as the Pall and Pennsy meets during the week of June 16. The Palladium team looks to be the next strongest in the league and unless the Himes Dairy manages to defeat the newspapermen it will make a 6trong bid in the game against the Roundhouse men from the Pennsy. Spacey and Bill Winters, batterymen r for the Pennsylvania are hard to beat,
