MERLE WILLIAMS FIRST RIGHMONDIAII TO WRITE FROM SECOND PATROL FLEET
Although Richmond hoys have wandered all over the face of the earth during the last World "War, the first letter to come back home from a "Wayne county lad -with the Second Patrol fleet off the Austrian coast arrived this week from Merle Williams who is stationed on a confiscated Austrian vessel, "Zrinyi" to which mail goes care of the U. S. S. Olympia and the New York postmaster. Williams is in the engineers department of the Sixth Division. He writes the following letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Williams of 133 North Eighteenth street. His father is directory clerk in the Richmond postoffice: "Before I write anything else I hd better give you an idea of our wonderful trip down here after we left the George Washington," he says. "About 4:30 o'clock after we debarked from the George Washington we entrained from an A. E. F. depot Sn Brest; left there about 7:25 and were on our way to Paris. The trip from Brest to Paris was not as good as from Paris on, as it was night. We
could see traces of the war vividly left behind, but we did not pass thru much of the sector where the fighting was. Arrived In Paris at 8:25 Friday morning, hungry as hounds. We mustered at the station and then went to the Aioeslcan Red Cross to get a good liot breakfast. After our repast we went back to the depot from which we were transported In trucks to another depot where we boarded a train for IVenice. There was a good sailor on the truck who took us a round-about way bo we could see the city. It certainly is a wonderful place. We could "still see the results of air raids, however, and a number of buildings were lEand-bagged as a protection. France Is Beautiful.. On our way to Venice we rode second class, which of course is no more than a common box car in America. Not going into details of every step
we made, I'll say that southern France is certainly wonderfully beautiful. The old calstles covered with blooming flowers and the snow capped Alps for a background, make a picture which couldn't be prettier.
"We passed through Monte Carlo on our way down. As a little kingdom between France and Italy, it has its own king and army of 600 men. It la, of course, known the world over for its gambling houses to which people
come from all parts of the world.
"After passing through Monte Carlo we hit the Italian border and had to change cars to an Italian train, and the Lord knows they did put us in box cars then. To make a long story
short, we arrived in Venice, Italy at
11:30 Sunday night, dead tired.
"We marched down the street or rather alley as the streets are all water to the Metropolitan hotel, where we had nice feather beds for the night. Oh, boyt maybe you think
we didn't sleep! Destroyer In Street.
"Monday morning we went to the
U. S. Destroyer "Isabel" which laid in Venice's Main street (canal). We stayed here until Wednesday noon,
going back to the hotel again Tues
day night. Wednesday noon we left
on the Destroyer "Stribling" for Spelate, Austria, where we are now. "We had a nice trip over. It tok us twelve hours, then we came abord this battle wagon (which is an old Austrian ship taken by the TJ. S.) "We are to stay here awhile until the peace question is decided. The vessel is an oil burner and I am standing watch on the fires. It'B a dandy job; we work on regulations and all that, but it a long ways from Broadway. We may be over here six or seven months, but will hit a good chance of getting out when we get back to the States again. ,
