Increases in telephone rates in k
dlan that will cost Hoosier telephone
users millions of dollars, a yearrates that several months ago when they were promulgated were heralded as decreases by the national administrationseem certain to those who have been studying iht decision of the United States supreme court, which held that the federal telephone administration has authority above that of state utilities commissions to regulate Intrastate telephone rates. The immediate effects of ln decision were cot felt in Indiana, because this state was not a ; part to the suits resulting in the sijprem court decision, but the indirect effect Is to afford a basis for decisions against - the Indiana public servict commission, which in five Instance! was holding off increases in telephone costs until it could be determined whether the rate& proposed by - th telephone companies had any basis ii financial, condition xl the jtlephont companies. ' - ' -' New Rates to Come Soon. With the basis gone for the commia sion's objection to the arbiter's ratei fixed by "the telephone administration it seems certain that' the- Burlesoi long distance and standard toll ratei would go into effect soon in Indiana intrastate long distance and toll traf
Ific; that the telephone companies ii
Indiana can continue charging instal I lation charges, authorized some time j ago by the federal administration',' but
ODjeciea 10 Dy tne siaie commission, that the Richmond Home Telephone company soon will increase its intra state toll rates the specified 25" pei cent; that the Southern Telephone company of Indiana shortly , will in - a . .1... . i rr.. iTAln
j crease lis rates ; iaai iub numo i cic i phone and Telegraph company of Fort
Wayne, will increase it3 rates in iu territory, covering much of northern Indiana; that increases of rates of the Connersville Telephone company also are certain, and that scores of other companies, including those in Indianapolis, probably will "- increase their rates on authority of - the telephone administration. ' Injunction Delays Increase. As to the Burleson standard long distance rates which now are kept out of the state by an injunction obtained in the Marion circuit court by the public service commission against the
Central Union Telephone company
and by the state of Indiana against the
Indianapolis Telephone company, it seems possible that legal procedure will delay the rates going into effect for some time. No Direct Bearing. The federal court decision does not touch this injunction beyond affording a basis ior its overthrow by the Supreme court of Indiana on appeal of the two defendant companies. However, the overthrow is certain. Attorneys for the Indianapolis companies already have an appear oh file. Such procedure is slow, and 'it might be some time before the higher Indiana court reversed the lower court. It is in the mind of some of the attorneys for the telephone companies to confer with the attorney-general of Indiana and counsel for the commission and to propose that they ask the lower court to withdraw its injunction and find for the telephone companies.
