;.-."v' LESSON NO. 9 7l9 Foup"Unit 8ystem. - in this lesson we are to see how the vibrator coll, explained in the last lesson, is used with a four-cylinder engine. While practically all other ignition systems have but one coll, where the vibrator coil is used, there usually.is a coil for each cylinder. For this reason this system Is called the "Four ' Unit System." In the last lesson we saw how the spark was timed by timing the vibrations of the coil. Obviously, If we
goes only through the coil connected to the segment with which the rotor is in contact, so that the secondary current will be produced only on this coil and there will therefore be a spark only in the cylinder to which the secondary wire of this coil is connected. As the rotor revolves it will come' in contact with the next segment and the vibrator of the coil connected with this segment will vibrate, and a spark will be produced in the cylinder whose spark plug is connected
to me secondary of this coil. Thus

'hav sfour j cylinders and four colls, . all that will be necessary, In order to time the four coils and four cylinders, will be. to .have four segments on the timer- instead of - only one. Such a timer-in connection with the four coils is shown in the illustration, Fig. 1. Instead of having, a wire go to the battery from each of the four coils, they are connected together by a wire or bar of copper, and a single wire is run from this bar to the battery, or magneto. This bar, which is shown
..ja ihe illustration, is called a buzz bar.
we get the sparks In the cylinders one after the other, the order In which they come depending on the order in which the wires are connected to the coils. In -wiring a four-unit system it is the practice to connect the secondary wires from the coils to the plugs in numerical, or 1-2-3-4 order, and to connect the primary wires to the timer in the firing order, as is shown in the illustration. As to the source of current. . In the Ford cars the current eenerallr cornea
often '."used, "a switch : being used to BWitch from the one to the other. Such a switch is shown in the illustration. - The Coil Box The practice- is to carry the four coils In a coil, box,-which box has the binding posts for the wires, so that the coils can be taken out or put in without touching the wiring. If you will examine one. of -your coils you will find on the one side of it two brass screws as A and B in Fig. 2, and in the coil box two brass springs in each compartment, which springs can press against the brass screws mentioned above. When the coll is in the box one set of these springs are connected to the buzz-bar which is set in the box, and to which the wire from the switch is connected, while the other set is connected to the binding posts for the wires which must go to the timer. Thus the current instead of going from the buzz-bar to the arms Z, as shown in Fig. 1, will first go to the springs mentioned and then to the screw and through a wire hidden in the coil to the arm Z. The current, after passing through the nri-
reary coil, will go to the other screw then through" the spring pressing against this screw to the binding post connected to it and then to the timer. The secondary coil is
the "piece of brass at the bottom of the coll, marked C In Fig. 2. You will see at the bottom , of the coil box a piece of carbon " which will press against this piece of 'brass when the coil is in the box. This piece of carbon Is connected to the binding post for the secondary wire "which is to go to the plug. -v '" Timing and Wiring of Four-Unit - System ." The SteDS to tak tn time

1. ay turning the engine" over by hand determine the direction in which the rotor rotates when the engine Is running. ' i - 2. Find the firing order. 3. Set the engine an that cvllnHar

Connect the secondary wires in numerical order to the spark plugs. 6. Connect up the battery. One wire will go to, the ground. the other to the binding post for it on the coil box. 6. Connect the primary wires which connect the coils to the timer, to their binding posts on the coil box. ; 7. . Retard the - spark control lever fully and then advance it about a half inch on its segment. 8. : Determine which end of the top segment in the timer will be first hit by the rotor, when it is revolving in the direction of rotation, and -with a pencil, mark on the outside of the timer the position of the end of the segment. 9. Set the rotor, so that ' a line drawn from the mark you have just made to the center of the rotor shaft, will pass through the point of the rotor which would first touch the .segment of. the, timer and fasten it. On, Ford cars, itv is necessary to compress the rotor a little against its spring, as this is the position It will take when In the timer. ' 10. Place the timer on the engine and connect the wire from coil number 1 to the top binding post. - Where the wires are in a casing so that they cannot be easily traced, you can tell which is connected to coil number 1 by closing the switch and then touching, the wires to the engine one after the other, until Be wire which will make coil number 2 vibrate is found. The other wires can be found likewise. , ' .. v,v. 11. " Test the Betting. When the switch is closed coid number , one should vibrate, but if the spark' control lever is slightly retarded it should stop vibrating. If it fails to stop the rotor must be turned back a little. Failure of the coil to vibrate is a sign that the rotor must be moved a little in the direction of rotation. ( By noticing the amount the spark, control
lever must be rtearded before the coil stops vibrating, or advanced before it starts to vibrate, you can judge the amount the rotor must be moved one way or the other. . .12. After the rotor has been properly set, attach the rest of the primaries in the firing order, that is, if the firing order, is 1-2-4-3, coil 2 will be attached , to the second segment hit by the rotor, four to the third and three to the fourth. The above, being given in great detail, may seem to be more difficult than it really is. It would be well for Ford owners to sort of check up the wiring of their car by going over
the steps given above, without taking off any of the wires. In our next lesson will take up the timing of a Distributer System.

For it is one thing to build a 10,000 a year car and another to build a 50,000 a year car. The chances are in favor by far of finding the real merit in the latter. The Maxwell has a record run of 300,000. all of one model behind it That means sureness of design, freedom from" "temperament," reliability plus, economy for certain, and always a ready market value. A larger car costs more to maintain. A smaller car has less luxury.
