Goux Has Helped Win War Since He Finished in 1914
at Indianapolis.
INDIANAPOLIS, lad. May 2. Jules Own, winner of the 1918 Xndlenapolla 600-mIl race, fcaa armed la Indianapolis to begin attire preparations for his campaign to capture . premier laorels in the flTe-ctntary Liberty Sweepstakes, May SI. With him came Albert PrTot, his mechanician In prerlous BOO-mlle raoes. Prerot, howerer, will not ride with Goux this year, his back harm been injured by a high explosiTe shell while drlrlns a car In the sanitary, corps on the Chemln des Dames. Goux wears a wound stripe also, baring been struck by a shell splinter In his left hand during the bombardment of Belfort in 191 S, where he was stationed as an artillery lieutenant. He serred as artillery lieutenant during the entire war, baring fought all orer the French front with a battery of 220-mOUmeter guns, the French hearles. Wearing on Nerve. Quizzed about his rlews concerning the war, Gonx said the struggle was begmnmg to wear on erery Frenchman's nerve toward the end, and America's active participation In the conflict did not come a minute too soon. "It was too long," Goux stated, "considerably longer than a flve-hun-dred-mile race." This Is the first time that Goux has visited Indianapolis since 1914, when lie won fourth in the Indianapolis 500mile race, after having been cheated out of first place by tire trouble. Since then a world war has been fought and won. Els companions of former visits to America are gone, and his return to this country awakened many tender memories. In former years Goux was a member of one of the most remarkable racing combinations ever assembled, an allstar aggregation noted for its unity of .thought and action, and the personal affection between Its members. It was composed of Goux, George Bofllot, greatest racing driver of all time, Paul Zuccarelli, the gifted Italian who helped design the celebrated Peugeot racing engine, and . Johnny Altken, who watched over the affairs of the foreign delegation in the capacity of coach and mentor. . Zuccarelli Meets Death. Zuccarelli met his death while practicing for the Grand Prix at Le Mans, in 1913, bowling squarely into a peasant's cart that appeared suddenly in the road from an opening in a hedge, the driver being deaf and dumb. Boillot's strfrit ascended in a halo of glory when its master essayed unequal combat with five Boche aeroplanes in 1915. Altkenisuccumbe'd to influenza, and Goux is thus the sole surviving member of the former all-star cast. : Goux brlns; with-hlra a -mall 150-cuble-inch Peugeot that he has assigned to Andre Bofllot, brother of Georges Boillot, who is coming over
on a later boat. This car, though small, is lightning fast and in perfect condition, having never been raced. It was built for the 1914 Le Mans races that were called off due to the outbreak of the war. Goux regards the car so highly that at times he has considered driving It himself, though his present purpose Is to drive one of the speedway's " Peugeots that were campaigned by the late Johnny Aitkn. Goux Is dubious regarding the condition of the speedway cars, and expects to give them both a thorough overhauling, virtually rebuilding the two cars into one. With this he expects to have an entry that will go through the entire BOO-mlle grind without the necessity of lifting the hood. Those who remember the care that Goux and his associates bestowed on their cars on their previous visits to Indianapolis, and recall their exquisite mechanical skill, feel certain that Goux will roll to the starting line with a finely groomed racing creation under him that will prove worthy of his best efforts and be in the forefront of the fray from the time the starting gun Is fired.

The attention of the world la centered Just now on the Adriatic seaport of Fiume. The Italian Feace delegates haw quit the conerence because their demands that this city be given to Italy have not been granted. President Wilson has stated positively that he will not yield to their demands. One of two developments is expected soon it is thought; Either the present delegates will return with new instructions from their government or new representatives will be chosen.
