Theater 'uMaHaHHi WA8HINGT0N Ever a popular favorite on stage and screen, Dustln Farnum is enjoying the good fortune, according to general report, of being provided in his latest
screen superfeature with what is proving 1o be the strongest and most attractive role of his career. This offering under the management of United Picture Theatre, Inc., is closely based in story on the thrilling novel written by Roger 'Pocock and dealing with the adventures of a son of Maine, who, - shipwrecked on an ocean voyage, falls into the comradeship of the sturdy and great-hearted men of the Northwest Fate," however, plays a shabby trick on the tenderfoot in permitting him to fall a victim to the wiles of an adventuress who beguiles him into marriage simply to Kin a wager she has made. Disillusionment follows for this man of ths tea and land, and he betakes himself
to the virgin woods to lead the life of "A Man In the Open." His stirring adventures in the Northwestern wilds form the main thread of the story, in which soon another, and this time a whole-souled girl, figures and lends fascinating heart interest to the picturizatlon. The action on "A Man in the Open" is said to be swift and punctuated by periods of gripping suspense with a startling denouement to clo3e the rtory. The latest Farnum play I? credited with a strong supporting cast, not the least of its features being some wonJorful photography of forest, -ountaln ind night scenes. "A Man in the Open" will be seen it the Washington theatre commencing today. MURRETTE. Rose Stahl's greatest dramatic sue-pf-KS, written by Charles Klein, was "Maggie Pepper," and had its first presentation in December, 1911, at the Harris Theatre, New York City. Undoubtedly one of the most successful stories ever staged, this play presents a remarkable human touch which immediately met with popular approval. A plctudxatlon of the play starring Ethel Clayton, will be displayed at the Murrette theatre today, Tuesday and Wednesday. There has probably been no play of recent years In which the element of heart interest has been so compelling as this romance of a department store employe, for Maggie Pepper, head of the silk department for fifteen years has had nothing but the commonplaces of business in her thoughts until suddenly she becomes obsessed with the desire to enter society. This she does with complete success and wins the admiration of a man who turns out to be the head of the firm, recently returned from a long sojourn in Europe. He makes Maggie manager of the business, but the scandal spectre stalks about and to save the situation she resigns. Throuph man ytrying situations Maggie's love remains steafast and ultimately triumphs. MURRAY. Did you ever hear of a player at

whist, or auction bridge, or any elmi lar game in which each of four players holds thirteen cards, having a hand made up exclusively of trumps? Probably not; yet who has played cards and not at some time wondered what were the chances of thus cornering trumps? The odds are declared by mathematicians to be expressed by the figures 168,753,389,900 which probably accounts for the fact that reports of such holdings are legendary only. In games like stud poker flayers often are curious as to the probable number of cards that must be dealt before at least one card of every suit ia turned up. The average, according to those who have taken the trouble to iigure the chances; is 7 419-63. The element of luck in gambling games is an intoxicating factor in a William Fox photoplay, "Gambling in Souls," featuring Madlaine Traverse,
which is shown at the Murray theatre today. It Is said to contain a story of most absorbing human interest.
