How to Grow IRISH POTATOES. While Irish potatoes are not adapted to growing In the extremely small garden, most gardeners prefer to include them in their list. One peck of seed Irish Potatoes will plant about 300 feet of row. Potatoes require a well-prepared, rich soil, and it pays to use a commercial fertilizer, well mixed with the soil of the hills or the rows. The seed should be cut two eyes to each piece, with plenty of potato attached. One piece should be planted to each hill and covered to a depth of about three and one-half or four inches. The rows should be at least thirty inches apar and the hills twelve to fifteen inches apart In the Early Irish potatoes may be planted a little before of about the time the last epring frosts occur. This will ?ive them an opportunity to make a start and reach the surface of the ground by warm weather. Irish potatoes require frequent cultivation and should be gradually hilled up to form a bed. Large quantities of manure should not be used. Great care should be taken to avoid seed affected by scab disease, as the disease develops rapidly and greatly injures the quality. Use nothing but clean, .veil-kept seed. EARLY CABBAGE. While cabbage does not rank very high in food value, a few plants of an extremely early variety are desirable L for the home garden. The seeds u should be sown indoors and the plants reset to the garden about the time that danger of frost is past. Cabbage requires a rich soil, and the plants of the smaller early sorts should be set eighteen inches apart in each direction for hand cultivation. It is a good plan to pour a little water around the roots of each plant as it is being set in the garden. If there Is danger of plants being destroyed by cut worms, a band of stiff paper should be placed around the stem of each plant. Early cabbage will mature In about sixty to seventyfive days after setting in the garden. ONIONS. Onions may be grown either from sets or from seed. The greater part at the commercial onion crop is grown from seed, but the usual method of planting in the garden is by the use jf sets. One quart of sets will plant from 75 to 125 feet of row with the plants four inches apart in the row; this depends, however, upon the size of the sets. Onion sets should be placed in a small furow, rooted downward, and covered to a depth of about 1 inches unless the soil is extremely heavy, in which case they should not be covered so deeply. Onion sets may be planted Just as early as the ground can be cultivated. In all sections except the northern part of the country, where the weather becomes too cold, certain varieties may be planted in the autumn and given slight protection over winter. In a very small garden, onion sets may be planted in a bed three or four inches apart in each direction. By this method al lthe work of cultivat-, ing must be done hy hand or with small hand tools, and is a little more difficult than where they are planted in a single row. Onions require frequent shallow cultivation and must be kept free from weeds. When the tops begin to ripen and bend down to the ground, it is time to remove the onions from the soil and spread them to dry in a cool, shady place where they will have plenty of air. Later the tops and roots can be trimmed off and the onions stored in a cool, dry place. Slight freezing does not hurt the bulbs in storage, provided they are not disturged while frozen. However, onions will be Injured by repeated freezing and thawing. Foe Was Winning In April, 191 7, Says Sims NEW YORK, April 10. "When we arrived in April, 1917. the central powers were winning the war, wheth er you knew It or not. There wci 700,000 to 800,000 tons of shipping being lost each month, and wo did not know how to stop it. We had to adopt a new method. We did this. We established first the convoy system; second, the depth chafge; third, the listening device. The convoy system might have been put into operation sooner than it was, but it had undergone a period of incorrect information." Rear Admiral William Snowden Sims, who commanded the American naval forces in European waters, gave this Information in an interview soon after he had stepped ashore at New York on his return. "The navy did not think It was possible," continued the admiral, "tP' handle thirty to forty ships in a convoy guarded mainly by merchant seamen and naval officers. When you speak of the great war, don't forget the merchant seamen. They stood by us all the way. All our armies and our navies wouldn't have availed us had it not been for these seamen."
