PAGE SEVEN,
Along with great changes in history there always go equal evolution in our fashions as -well as in our furniture, though there is never a sharp shift in the mode, buf a gradual, little-by-little procedure of which we are hardly conscious until a few seasons pass and we find ourselves in an entirely new period. Reflecting the present humor of the world's state of mind, styles are not just sure where they will settle, and it is safe to follow one's own ideas along the line of new purchases, except for a general dictum which those who have made a study of the situation have laid down for us. After all, it is their long Btudy and discernment which has enabled them to assemblw pieces of furniture from entirely different periods and make them form
a decorative whole which Is a pleasure to the eye. It is not only the disThe walls as well as the furniture that counts, but the harmonious arrangement of the accordant back ground is of greatest importance. The Louis sixteenth period is ono that is fairly safe to adopt if one Is doing one's own decorating, for it must be adhered to strictly, and there is no risk of creating a false note if we know our Louis. .A most attractive dining room exploiting this period might be attempted in less costly materials by the amateur decorator. The walls as wel las the furniture were of pale gray. Side lights only were used, and they were shaded hi shields of gray silk lined with yellow. Instead of a sideboard, two consoles were placed one at each
end of the room, and they had for j ornamentation tall candlesticks of distinctive design. The chairs were cushioned in yellow and the net cur tains at the window had over draper-j

An entirely different treatment and a more formal one was a dining room done in antique oak, Stuart design, and painted in dull colors with the chair cushions in this instance were wine red velvet, and wrought iron lamps were placed at the four corners of the room. Refectory tables with benches have been adopted for informal use in small dining rooms. There are two master chairs usually with these seta,
and unshaded tapers in brass holders are used for lighting. Long hemmed runners of natural linen crash are the proper covers both for service and between meals. In selecting new furniture for any room in the house, it is, of course, of especial Importance to consider how the new will harmonize with the old, and how the combination will create an artistic whole. We all have remembered admonishings about our first experience at house furnishing. Our mothers told us that we must buy carefully, for once we got a piece of furniture we would have it the rest of our days. This is more or less so, but we all have to learn for ourselves the wisdom of buying the best, even if it is only one chair, so that when we add to it
we can add the best and not something to do Just until wo can do better! A wise addition to a living room would be an arcaded table of Italian influence, whose outlines would blend perfectly with an early British or ever a colonial chair. A pair of - polychrome book ends and a batiked silk cover would give an air worth while to the whole room; try it. Tapestry arm chairs these days almost invariably have an accompanying small table with a cozy lamp and some books at one's elbow. In fact, small tables of almost any description are being used for many purposes, and it isn't unusual to see three or four different designs in one room. When it's tea time, even the simplest little table can be made to look
the personification of cozlness when fitted up with a snowy cloth and a tea service of pink luster, or even an assembled odd lot of pieceB which have associations; 1 Painted sets are at the moment the most popular for bedrooms. One of the pretty ones shown f at a recent exhibition had a color note of lavender and blue. This is a treacherous combination, however, and should be attempted only when there is plenty of light and sunshine most of the day in the room for which it is intended. It can make most places look very cold and un-homelike. Anyway, thl3 room which I have in mind bad walls of gray with a chintz pattern in lavender and blue tones, The carpet was blue, and the side lights were shaded in two toned eilk com
bining the colon. The furniture, which was of Adam design, was painted gray and ornamented T.ith tiny Chinese motifs. That sounds jazzy, but it was done, and by one of the best known manufacturers In the country. There were twin beds, a dressing table, a wardrobe, a bedside toble, a desk, a slipper chair, a chaise lounge and a knitting tablo, all for one room. This shows something of a new tendency to have a piece of furniture for everything we do nowadays, as a contrast to the almost Puritanical ideas we bare bad in the recent past-
Efficiency experts have been studying files, and find that the life of one of these tools, on the average, is about 25,000 strokes.
